The rudd bites well in spring and summer, and by autumn it loses interest in bait, as it goes to depth, and it is not possible to catch it with ordinary gear. Therefore, it makes no sense to count on the biting of the rudd in the autumn.
Methods for catching rudd
- Float rod. This is the most common fishing method and involves the use of a fly or match rod.
- On the bombarda or, as it is also called sbirulino. As bait, you can use artificial baits, such as small twisters, lures, as well as animal baits in the form of a worm or maggot.
- For feeder tackle, but at depths not exceeding 1,5 meters, since the rudd is a surface fish.
- Using spinning and very small baits, type of fly, baubles, wobblers, etc. This method does not always give results, since the rudd only attacks artificial baits under certain conditions.

Float fishing
This method is the most catchy, and therefore is very popular with fishermen. This is a very light tackle, and from casting to a bite it lasts a few seconds, and then it’s a matter of technique – hook and pull the fish. Usually rudd is not far from the coast, at depths up to 1 meter. If you properly equip the fishing rod, then catching this fish will not be difficult.
Rudd can be attracted to the place of fishing with the following bait
A crust of regular white or black bread, which can collect a flock of rudd. The crust is usually on the surface of the water, so you can always see when the line should be cast. But the crust can swim far from the shore, so it makes sense to make some kind of device, like a feeder. You can use an ordinary fishing line, to which a crust of bread is tied, and a sinker to the other end. The length of the piece of fishing line or rope must be greater than the depth so that the crust is always on the surface of the water.
At the end of fishing, the device must be pulled out of the water so that it can be used in the future.
It is possible to use purchased ready-made mixtures for rudd, but they all sink in water. Therefore, you need to sculpt not large lumps and throw them into the water. In the same place should be thrown and a fishing rod.
Rudd will not refuse such bait and will definitely come to the place of fishing.
Use homemade food, which should contain dusty components in the form:
- decoys;
- Flour;
- Oatmeal.
The basis of bait can serve as breadcrumbs, pearl barley, millet and other ingredients of plant origin.
Bait
The best bait for rudd is maggot, but it can also be used:
- Worm;
- Motyl;
- Testa;
- Sweet corn.
The rudd will not refuse any bait, no matter what it is offered, even if it is a grasshopper.
Since the rudd stays closer to the surface of the water, then you need to catch it in the same place. If sinking bait is used, then the depth must be set appropriately.
The use of a sbirulino float (bombards)
This is a specially heavy float that allows you to throw tackle at a considerable distance from the shore, while the tackle is held on the surface of the water. One or more hooks are attached to the main line, on which both artificial and natural baits, in the form of maggot or worm, are attached. This tackle allows you to fish at a considerable distance from the shore. The weight of the float can reach several tens of grams, which makes it possible to throw it far enough.
Catching rudd feeder
As a rule, rudd can be caught at depths of no more than 1,5 meters, since in spring and summer it rarely goes to depth and only when it gets cold or strong winds.
The technique of fishing with a feeder in shallow water is as follows:
- Make several casts (up to 10) for the initial feeding of the fishing point. After starting casts, you should pause for about 15 minutes so that the rudd comes to the stern.
- After the initial feeding, it is necessary to change the feeder to one that could create a minimum of noise during casts. Most likely, it will be a smaller feeder.
- The technique and tactics of fishing with a feeder at depth and in shallow water are almost the same and it makes no sense to describe them in more detail.
The use of spinning for catching rudd
Catching her on a spinning rod is not so easy. Most likely, it will be an accident if a rudd gets caught on a spinning rod.
For such fishing, it is possible to use:
- Not big flies along with a leash.
- Little edible rubber twisters.
- Turntables and vibrators of zero magnitude.
- Little wobblers.
Catching rudd is an exciting activity that you want to repeat again and again. Although the fish is not big, but the pleasure is great and a lot of impressions from being near the reservoir. Most importantly, no special gear is required. You just need to equip a fishing rod and take a crust of bread with you. Thus, we can say that half the work is done, it remains only to arrive at the reservoir and find a promising place, and then it’s a matter of technology.
As for such equipment as sbirulino, you will have to sweat here, although the bombard has much more opportunities, since it is possible to catch a large area of water. For such equipment, a spinning rod with the possibility of long-distance casting is better suited. Do not save on fishing line and reel. You should always remember that at any moment a large fish can bite and then you can seriously regret it.
What equipment to use, how to catch and what kind of fish – depends on the amateur fisherman. After all, it is not in vain that there are “crucians” who prefer to catch only crucian carp. There are “donochniks” who focus only on bottom gear and do not recognize anything else. Among such a variety, you can meet spinners who hunt only predatory fish.
