According to most fishing enthusiasts, crucian carp is a rather capricious fish. Basically, this applies to large specimens, weighing more than 1 kg. As for the small and medium carp, everything is clear here, since they peck more or less stably. Due to the fact that it is not so easy to catch a large carp, there are not so many lovers of such fishing. Most of the “crucians” catch the crucian that is actively pecking. This article has information that can help in catching large individuals.
Where and when to catch large carp
Carp belongs to the family of cyprinid fish species, of which there are five species. Among them there are such species as silver and gold, capable of growing up to 3 kg. These are the two largest species, among which there were record holders, weighing up to 5,5 kilograms. Crucian carp can grow up to 50 cm in length, and it starts spawning in the fourth year of life.
Crucian carp is not found in mountain reservoirs and prefers reservoirs located in the lowlands. In reservoirs located in harsh climatic conditions, crucian carp hibernate when winter sets in. Silver carp and gold carp are distinguished by the following features:
- a large silver carp has a silver-gray scale color, and a gold one has a yellow tint;
- the silver carp has 31 scales located along the lateral line, and the goldfish has 33 scales;
- golden carp has a larger head shape when viewed from the side, and silver carp is more pointed;
- young goldfish have a black spot located in front of the caudal fin. True, over time, this spot disappears when the golden carp becomes an adult.
Many are interested in exactly when to catch large carp. Much depends on various external factors, such as:
- Times of Day;
- weather;
- availability of forage.
Speaking of early spring, then crucian carp is actively caught during the pre-spawning period. The activity of crucian carp during this period is explained by two main reasons: the feeling of hunger after wintering and the need to accumulate energy for the spawning period. When the crucian leaves for spawning, its activity will resume only at the beginning of summer, when it gets sick after spawning.
In the summer crucian pecks more early in the morning and late in the evening, when the heat of the day subsides. At night, large individuals are activated, which can be caught not far from the coast. If the weather conditions are favorable, then the crucian pecks around the clock. This can happen in cloudy but warm summer weather, and even better, if it drizzles with light rain. When the weather worsens, especially in cold weather, crucian carp stops feeding and goes to the depths. But what is most interesting is that the crucian feels the approach of bad weather and begins to feed actively. Therefore, this factor can be taken into account when predicting the weather.
With the onset of autumn the activity of the crucian also increases. This period will last until the first frost. During this period, crucian carp stocks up on nutrients for the wintering period.
In winter crucian carp can lead an active lifestyle and feed or fall into hibernation. It all depends on the nature of the reservoir, the availability of food resources, the saturation of water with oxygen, as well as the presence of predators such as pike.
Gear selection
The effectiveness of the “hunt” for crucian carp largely depends on the correct configuration of the gear. During periods when crucian carp grabs everything that is offered to it, it is natural that there are no special requirements for tackle. But when such periods are left behind, then the choice of gear must be approached with all seriousness.
float tackle
This is the most common and popular tackle for catching carp, both small and large. It consists:
- From a rod. The choice of rod depends on the nature of the place where it is supposed to be thrown. The length of the rod can be in the range of 4-7 meters. The longer the rod, the heavier it is. This means that with a rod length of 5 meters or more, you should choose carbon fiber blanks, as the most durable and, at the same time, the lightest material.
- From a float. Floats in the form of a tube, weighing no more than 1 gram, are suitable for fishing for crucian carp. Goose feather fits perfectly. It produces a light and high-quality float with maximum sensitivity.
- From fishing line. Monofilament fishing line, no more than 0,25 mm thick, is suitable for catching large carp. Better if the line is thinner. She is not so alarming for the crucian, especially during the period of established biting after spawning. As an option that solves this problem, it is the use of braided fishing line, which is stronger, which means that you can equip the fishing rod with thinner fishing line.
- From the hook. Hooks №№ from the 5th to the 7th inclusive are ideal for catching large carp.
- From a sinker. The sinker is selected experimentally, based on the design and weight of the float.
- From a leash. As a rule, leashes are made of fluorocarbon. This recently appeared material makes it possible to solve many problems related to fish alertness. You can take fluorocarbon, with a diameter of 0,12-0,15 mm.
Feeder (bottom) tackle
Bottom tackle is selected depending on the nature of the reservoir. If this is a large body of water and you have to cast the tackle far, then you should choose a feeder rod with a test of at least 120 g. Its length can lie within 4 m or more. It all depends on the casting distance. The use of thin fishing line is not justified because of the possibility of its breaking during casting, given that the weight of the feeder or sinker reaches 30 g or more. To cut off small carp, hook number 9 will be just right.
Makushatnik
Its specific tackle, which uses makuha (cake), as an attracting element. Most fishermen claim that only small crucian are caught on the top, but some manage to catch large individuals. At the same time, they adhere to certain rules:
- Together with the crown, a suitable nozzle is mounted on the hook, in the form of a large worm or granules.
- If you use a carp bait, such as a hair bait, then the probability of catching a large specimen increases significantly.
Most anglers, if a crown is used, do not put additional bait on the hook, but simply stick them into the crown. Pressed cubes of sunflower meal are used in the equipment of the crown. This cube is attached in different ways, but the principle of catching is the same.
Spinning tackle
Spinning is a unique type of tackle. Despite the fact that the spinning rod is intended for catching predatory fish, many anglers use it as a universal tackle, including as a bottom one. With the help of spinning, you can cast the bait far from the shore, where there are large individuals.
Nozzle for catching large carp
Large carp are caught on any nozzle, depending on the time of year. If it is spring, then crucian prefer animal bait, such as a worm, bloodworm or maggot. When going on spring fishing for large crucian carp, it is better to take a few objects for bait with you. This is due to the fact that large crucian carp are unpredictable and it is not known what kind of bait it is going to peck today.
With the advent of summer, after the spawning period, crucian carp begins to switch to plant baits. It can be corn, peas, boiled potatoes, pearl barley, etc. But this does not mean at all that animals should be forgotten about the nozzle. Not at all, there are times when crucian carp, except for a worm or maggot, wants nothing more. Crucian carp can study the bait for a long time, therefore, from the fisherman, great patience and endurance are required.
The nuances of bait
In order for fishing to be successful, as many amateur anglers put it, certain factors must be taken into account. These include:
- Adding, without fail, bite activators.
- Bait should contain flavoring substances.
- If the bait is nutritious, then it is recommended to place it in a canvas bag.
Each bait is prepared using the necessary components, as well as observing the proportion and technology. Each angler may have his own recipe, for example, with pumpkin seeds:
- 3 grams of dill;
- 6 grams of sugar;
- 100 g pumpkin seeds, bran and crackers.
Until a homogeneous mass is obtained, ordinary clay is added to these ingredients.
There are many other ways to catch large carp using various baits. As an option, you can offer a recipe for bait, which perfectly collects large carp:
- barley porridge;
- peas;
- anise oil;
- millet.
To begin with, warm water is taken and barley is steamed in it, after which peas and millet are added to it. After that, the main ingredients are mixed and left for several hours to infuse the bait. Then the water is drained and anise oil is added to the bait. It is important not to overdo it here, otherwise the bait will scare away the crucian. Bait should be at least 250 g. Before fishing, it is thrown in small portions at the fishing point.
Hunting strategy and technique
First you need to find a promising place, or the so-called crucian path. It’s not so easy, even for experienced, seasoned fishermen, not to mention novice anglers. But it happens that it is enough to find a place where crucian loves to spend time. It can be thickets of water lilies, reeds, as well as other places that attract crucian carp.
A promising point for casting bait can be a clean place, located next to thickets of aquatic vegetation or a window of clean water. Crucian carp very often come out of their hiding places to clean areas to look for food for food.
A very important stage is the correct use of bait, or rather, the use of the correct bait, which includes those components that crucian carp constantly feed on. If he sees something new for himself, he is unlikely to pounce on this food. Therefore, you need to know what crucian carp eat in this reservoir.
And one more, but very important point, without which you can not count on the capture of large individuals, is the observance of silence. If possible, the nozzle should be lowered to the fishing point, but not thrown. Excessive noise may not attract large carp, and he will simply ignore what just fell into the water.
A few secrets
Carp, especially large ones, need a special approach, and almost all anglers are sure of this.
The main secret is to find a promising placeon which the entire success of fishing depends. You need to try to find an interesting place for large carp. Decide on a fishing spot using the following approaches:
- carry out own observations and, on their basis, determine a catchable place;
- try to get information from experienced “cutters”.
As mentioned above, large crucian carp prefer to be in thickets of water lilies, reeds, reeds, etc. Therefore, it is better to start feeding the point near such places. Having smelled the aroma of attractive components, crucian carp may certainly become interested. Therefore, there is a possibility that he will appear in this place.
Large carp are alarmed by the slightest noise on the shore, therefore, keeping quiet is the right way to catch large carp.
When going fishing for large carp, it is necessary to take into account the fact that its behavior is fundamentally different from the behavior of small individuals. Small carp prefer to gather in flocks and thus move around the pond. Adults lead an isolated lifestyle and prefer to be alone. Therefore, the capture of a large crucian is always an event. At the same time, do not expect that there will be several of them. Although, if the bait works, then several individuals may come to the place of fishing. But this does not mean that all of them will be able to catch.
