With the advent of autumn, catching any fish becomes more difficult and crucian carp is no exception. As the water temperature drops, the fish become less active than in the summer. Despite this, crucian carp can be successfully caught before ice appears on the reservoirs, if you do not ignore some rules, although the bite of crucian carp reduces its activity in any case.
During this period, you need to know what bait should be offered to crucian carp so that he does not refuse it. Effective fishing can be if the crucian bait is served on a tray so that he does not have to look for something similar in the water column. At the same time, one should never forget about the influence of weather conditions on the bite of crucian carp. Moreover, with the advent of autumn, this factor is of particular importance. It is not easy to get to the active bite of crucian carp even in summer, if the weather is constantly changing and atmospheric pressure is constantly jumping.
The article is aimed at acquainting both beginners and experienced anglers with the intricacies of autumn crucian fishing. Subtleties should be understood as the technique of finding promising places, determining the time of fishing, reading the weather factor, choosing the appropriate bait and gear. Such information can be useful for any category of anglers.
Where, when and how to catch carp in the fall
Catching crucian carp in the fall comes down to deciding on the time and place of fishing. In this case, depending on the weather and season, you should decide on the nature of the bait and the possibility of bites.
In September, when warm weather has set in, crucian carp continue to get their own food in the coastal zone, actively responding to various baits. If this period is characterized by warm weather, then catching crucian carp during this period is no different from catching it in the summer, although the worsening of the bite is noticeably felt.
With the onset of autumn cold, crucian carp begins to move away from the coast and occupy deep-sea places, practically without leaving them. With the advent of the month of October, it is very difficult for crucian carp to be interested in any bait, even if he smells it. Therefore, it does not make sense to count on productive fishing during this period.
With the onset of autumn, it makes no sense to look for crucian carp in the gently sloping sections of reservoirs. During this period, it is attracted by steeper banks. In this case, one should take into account such a factor as the direction of the wind. Carp prefers to be on the banks where the wind blows, as it washes food from the ground for fish.
Despite the fact that crucian went to the pits, you can still catch it if you find its parking lot. At the same time, it is better to throw the bait not into the pit itself, but at the exit from the pit. Moreover, if the bait falls at some distance from the crucian, then he will not react to it. If no bites follow within 15-20 minutes, then the tackle will have to be thrown to another point.
But when periods of warming come in autumn, crucian carp partially resumes its activity. Then the crucian begins to go to shallow water, where the water warms up much faster. In this case, the angler may have several productive days. He actively begins to peck before the start of a cold snap or on cloudy, but relatively warm days.
CARP ON A FLOAT IN AUTUMN
Autumn bait for carp
Crucian feels the onset of real cold weather. In order for him to survive them, he needs to eat well and quickly gain weight, or rather stock up on nutrients. Therefore, his diet is changing. He switches to high-calorie protein foods, which are enough in baits of animal origin.
With the advent of autumn, crucian ceases to peck at the usual summer baits. Therefore, in order to catch him, you will have to switch to the following baits:
- on a worm;
- on maggot;
- on a moth.
If the angler has these three baits, then you can safely count on the capture of crucian carp. If there is only one of them, then crucian carp may not be caught.
During this period, he begins to sort out baits, so you can lose money with one bait. Most likely, he will refuse all baits and there will be only one option left – these are sandwiches, which consist of combinations of various baits. This technique allows you to activate the bite of crucian. In the case of using sandwiches, it is also possible that crucian carp may be interested in a combination that includes a vegetable attachment. For example:
- corn plus worm;
- corn plus maggot;
- pearl barley plus bloodworms, etc.
And this, despite the fact that the crucian ignores any nozzles of plant origin in the fall. But in combination with animal attachments, they work. As for plant-based baits, quite large crucian carp can bite on them, although bites can be expected for a very long time.
In this regard, the conclusion suggests itself that in autumn it is very difficult for crucian carp to be interested in any of the baits, and only a sandwich can somehow make the crucian swallow the bait. Both ordinary crucian and large ones bite on sandwiches, which is important.
Bait for crucian carp
Groundbait for crucian carp in the fall may not affect the effectiveness of fishing, but it also makes no sense to refuse it. In any case, you should count on the fact that crucian carp will still be interested in it. Crucian is an unpredictable fish, therefore, you should try any options. Groundbait in the fall should have a special consistency, consisting mainly of small fractions that are easily dispersed in water, creating a voluminous food cloud in the water. A similar approach to the use of bait in the fall will always justify itself. In addition, the amount of bait can be minimal. For the whole day of fishing, one kilogram of bait will be enough.
Bait can be prepared by yourself or bought ready-made, in dry form. To make it ready for use, it is enough to add a certain amount of water from the reservoir. But in this form in the fall, bait will not be effective. Animal components should be added to it, such as a worm, maggot or bloodworm. That is, exactly those components for which it is supposed to fish. To keep the bait at a minimum, it should also be mixed with the ground.

Tackle for catching crucian carp in autumn
You can catch crucian carp in the fall both on a regular float rod and on a bottom tackle (feeder). Moreover, with the advent of autumn, it should be thinner, since the water becomes more transparent, which is very important. The crucian carp can notice a thick fishing line and refuse to bite, moving away from a dangerous place.
In order for the crucian to still dare to try the bait offered to him, it is advisable to use a very thin fishing line: the thinner the better. If the fishing gear is an ordinary fishing rod, then a fishing line with a thickness of 0,1 to 0,15 mm will be the most suitable. When fishing on the bottom gear (on the feeder), you can increase the thickness to 0,18 mm. As a rule, mostly small individuals are caught on the hook, and such a thin fishing line is enough. But if a large crucian is caught in a pond, then the thickness of the fishing line should be selected taking into account this factor.
Tackle should not only be invisible to crucian carp, but also sensitive enough. The sensitivity of the tackle determines the weight and shape of the float. In autumn, it is advisable to use quill or pencil floats. They are considered the most sensitive. This is due to the fact that crucian carp takes the bait quite carefully in autumn and not every float is able to fix these cautious bites. In addition, other types of floats, due to the peculiarities of their shape, can simply scare away the fish.
As for the selection of the hook, its size should correspond to the size of the fish, as well as the nature of the bait used. If very thin tackle is used, with a fishing line of 0,1-0,15 mm, then hook No. 15-10 on the international scale is sufficient. If a larger crucian is caught (from 500 g or more), then the size of the hook can be increased. In any case, the hook must fit freely in the fish’s mouth.
Conclusion
Fishing is one of the most effective ways of recreation, therefore, the number of anglers is increasing exponentially. This is due to the problems that a person faces literally every day. In order to somehow, at least for the weekend, forget about these problems, most of the men go to the nearest reservoirs, taking with them tackle with bait. For most fishing enthusiasts, this process does not stop throughout the year. They are happy to go fishing, both in summer and autumn, including winter and spring. Unfortunately, not many of them know that seasonal fishing has its own characteristics. Therefore, they take with them those baits that they used in the summer. In other words, they use, for example, a worm, all year round. As a result – no result, especially in the fall. When catching crucian carp in the fall, there are some peculiarities, therefore, you should go fishing with a whole set of baits, both of plant and animal origin: no one knows which of them the crucian will start pecking at.
