Not a complicated device, which is called “quok”, allows you to make catching catfish more effective. When hitting the surface of the water, a characteristic sound is made, which is very attractive to the catfish. As a rule, hunting for catfish is carried out from a boat, while the tackle is lowered into the water, and with the help of a “kwok” it is attracted to the place of fishing. If you use the “kwok”, then you can catch catfish during the day.
Making a “kwok” with your own hands
This is not a tricky fishing device, you can easily make it yourself. In this case, you can make several options, and then on fishing it will be determined which one creates a more attractive sound for the catfish. There are many similar models, but the principle of their work is the same.
The quok structure consists of:
- Handles.
- Knife.
- Piglet.
The kwok handle can be made of wood or duralumin. There is not much difference here, the main thing is that it can make a certain sound. As for the knife, duralumin may be the best material, since the tree is not so strong and can break when it hits the water. For the manufacture of a knife, you can also use duralumin or ordinary aluminum, about 3 mm thick. How to attach a patch to a knife is a matter of fantasy: you can use screws, you can use rivets. The main thing is to keep a certain angle. Alternatively, you can use epoxy. To do this, the knife is clamped in a vise at a certain angle and at its end, a form is made of plasticine, into which epoxy is then poured.
The main condition for good work is that the fill plane is horizontal.
After connecting the main parts of the “quok”, it is finished with sandpaper or a file, after which it can be opened with a colorless waterproof varnish so that it does not oxidize.

How to buy a “kwok”
For those who don’t want to waste time making quokkas, commercially made quokkas are available in anglers’ stores. But everyone knows perfectly well that the industry approaches this issue formally and the quality of products is not always up to par. How the “kwok” works and what sound it makes can only be determined by fishing, but when buying, you should pay attention to such trifles:
- The product must be marketable.
- The handle is well sanded and varnished.
- The knife should also be well polished.
- There is an angle of about 60 degrees between the handle and the knife.
Necessary tackle for fishing on the “kwok”
Since catfish need to be caught from a boat, the following devices are needed for this: a strong fishing line or cord that can withstand loads up to 100 kg, to the end of which a meter-long leash is tied, 0,5-0,8 mm thick with a hook, not lower than number 30. The line can be fixed on a powerful, short rod or on a reel. Tackle should have a sinker, depending on the conditions of fishing. When using a reel, you should pay attention to its design: it should be such that the hand does not intersect with a fishing line or cord, because it is life-threatening – a catfish can easily drag a fisherman under water.
Lures and baits for catfish
When catching catfish on the “kwok” you can use the following baits:
- Worms.
- Shell-pearl.
- Bark beetle larvae.
- Medvedka or locust.
- Frog.
- Pieces of meat or fish.
- Burnt bird.
Although the catfish is an omnivorous fish, you will have to work hard to find the right bait. Therefore, when leaving for such fishing, you should stock up on several baits.
Search for a promising place
Catfish can be located in different places in the water area of the reservoir, but the most favorite are the pits where it rests during the day and leaves them at night in search of food. In order to find holes, it is better to use an echo sounder, especially if the reservoir is unfamiliar. Promising places include places with steep banks, as well as places with rich aquatic vegetation.
How to quack correctly: catching technique
It is better if two anglers will hunt for catfish, while the presence of a boat is mandatory, but first, you need to decide on a promising place. After finding it, they rise up, against the current, lower the tackle with the bait to a depth of 5-7 meters and let the boat go with the flow. After that, you should start to quack: 3-4 quok hits with pauses of 10-20 seconds. If the first pass did not give any result, then the procedure can be repeated. In the event that after several passes there were no bites, it is better to replace the kwok or practice with the technique of obtaining the appropriate sound.
If a bite has occurred, and the catfish took the bait, then you should not rush to strike. The cutting should be done carefully, without touching the fishing line with your hands – the catfish is a strong fish and its jerks can cut your hands. If the specimen is serious, then you will have to tinker, the main thing here is to tire the fish so that it stops its resistance.
Catfish are dragged into the boat with the help of a hook. If there is one person in the boat, then it is extremely difficult to cope with such a fish: you need to pull the fish, keep your balance, and control the boat.
