Carrot Abaco F1

A hybrid of the Dutch selection Abaco F1 carrots of mid-ripening maturity is recommended for cultivation in home gardens and farms in temperate climates. The fruits are even, not prone to cracking, rich dark orange in color, blunt, descending in a smooth cone.

Variety description

The plant is not prone to flowering (the formation of a flower shoot in the first year of vegetation due to adverse conditions), Alternaria leaf spot (caused by infection with spores of imperfect fungi). Seeds of Abako carrots sprout together, without lagging behind in the development of plants. The vegetable plant of the Shantane kuroda cultivar has changed for the better.

Agrotechnics

Soil preparation

Plan in the fall where the carrot ridge will be located. Suitable predecessors and the introduction of mineral fertilizers, humus, ash (0,2 kg / m2) will enrich the soil to the depth of the bayonet. The acidic reaction of the soil involves the introduction of deoxidizers:

  • A piece of chalk;
  • Slaked lime;
  • Dolomite.
Attention! The Abako carrot variety is sensitive to soil pH below 6.

Enriching the soil with compost and peat reduces the acid reaction. The introduction of river sand improves the aeration of the soil and the supply of moisture to the roots. Freezing the clods of earth will reduce the number of weeds and pests.

In the spring, it is enough to level the ridge with a rake, draw furrows up to 3 cm deep in the soil. The distance between the furrows is 20 cm. Immediately before sowing carrot seeds, water-charging irrigation is done. The furrows are abundantly shed 2 times. The bottom of the furrows is compacted.

Another option for sowing is the use of a conductor, which makes the same depressions in the soil of the ridge at an equal distance.

Germination of seeds and sowing

Full-fledged ripened root crops ripen on average 90 days after carrot sprouts: seed germination before the leaves come to the surface lasts 2–3 weeks in open ground. A significant difference in terms is due to the conditions that the gardener will create for the vegetation of the plant. Abako carrots do not belong to capricious varieties; waste during seed germination is no more than 3-5%. Creating greenhouse conditions will reduce the percentage of unsprouted seeds.

Soaking carrot seeds is preferably carried out in snow water. Melt water is an unsurpassed natural growth stimulator. Ice from the freezer compartment of the refrigerator is a suitable substitute for snow. You need to freeze the settled water. Seeds in a linen or cotton napkin are saturated with water for 3 days.

Advice! A simple time-tested trick will help to avoid overspending planting material: wet seeds are placed in a cup with weathered sifted wood stove ash. After mixing, small seeds will take the form of granules the size of beads.

The process of planting in a ridge will be simplified, the distance between plants in a row is respected. Half of the thinning work was done on the day the carrots were planted in the row, in the first phase of the cultivation of the plant, as prescribed for the Abaco variety.

Sowing is completed by backfilling furrows with sown carrot seeds prepared with heated compost. The compost is loose, so the furrows are sprinkled with a slide, and then carefully slammed with a wide board with a handle so that compaction takes place evenly. The ridge is sprinkled with a light layer of mulch immediately after planting the carrots.

A cool wind dries and chills the earth, at night the temperature drops. Covering material will protect the soil and seeds. The arches create a sufficient volume of heated air above the ridge, but if they are not at hand, lumber trimmings are used to raise the protective cover above the soil by 5–10 cm.

Attention! Covering the ridge with agrofiber allows not to lose evaporating moisture after water-charging irrigation. The soil does not form a crust.

The bed breathes, the seeds are in comfortable conditions. Germination occurs evenly. Creating a greenhouse microclimate for seeds will accelerate the emergence of a dense brush of seedlings. After the shoots of carrots, the film is not needed.

Care of plantings

The rows of carrots that have sprouted on the ridge are marked, regular watering is carried out, row spacing is loosened and plants are thinned in several steps. The first thinning is carried out until the paired leaves reach a height of 1 cm. Weak, stunted plants are removed.

Advice! After the second thinning, the distance between the shoots will be at least 4 cm. This will provide the young carrots with sufficient nutrition. Removal of weak shoots revealed promising plants that will produce a crop.

Once every 3-4 weeks, plants are fed, in addition to aqueous solutions of mineral fertilizers, weekly infusions of mullein and bird droppings are used in a ratio of 1: 10. Excessive watering and top dressing lead to increased growth of tops to the detriment of root development.

At 1 m2 soil for watering young plants in the dry season consumes 5 liters of settled water. Evening watering is preferred. Adult plants consume 6-8 liters of water. Overdrying and waterlogging of the soil are equally harmful: the roots will crack. For long-term storage, such fruits are unsuitable.

Cleaning and storage

The last watering before harvesting the mid-ripening Abaco hybrid carrots is carried out 2 weeks before harvesting, if there was no rain. Root crops are not cleaned. Adhering clods of soil prevents wilting during long-term storage. Sand and pine sawdust are suitable as a cover against fruit wilt. The recommended storage temperature for carrots is +1–+4 degrees.
