Caring for a tropical palm tree with fan leaves

Due to the specific shape of the leaves, some varieties of palm are called fan-shaped. Some representatives of this tree can be grown at home from seeds.

What a tropical palm tree with fan leaves looks like

When grown at home, the palm reaches 1,5 m in height. She has several trunks that are scattered in breadth. Each trunk has a dense crown, which consists of fan-shaped leaves. They are green and green-gray.

The fan palm can be easily grown in the garden.

The leaves are tough, covered with delicate hairs on top. It is not its growth that makes a large palm tree, but its extensive leaves. The plant has thorns on the petioles.

Such a palm tree is grown in spacious rooms or in an open garden. In summer, the plant needs fresh air.

Place the flowerpot with a palm tree in a drafts-free area. This tropical plant does not like sudden changes in temperature, so it can easily get sick. The sun is useful for the palm tree. In the warm season, the plant feels good at room temperature, but in the winter it needs care. At temperatures above + 20 ° C, the palm tree dries up, in winter the optimum temperature is + 8 ° C. In an open area, the plant will survive even at –10 ° C.

The humidity in the room should be high. Humidifiers can be used, but it is best to spray the foliage several times a day.

Take care of the tree in this way:

  • Water. In summer every day, in winter – once every 2-3 weeks. The water temperature must be up to 30 ° C. Spray the leaves as well.
  • Spray. In the summer, use settled water; in the winter, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.
  • Feed with mineral fertilizers every 3 weeks. Use a ready-made mixture that is sold in specialty stores. Do not feed anything during winter.

If the leaves begin to crawl out of the pot, then the plant should be transplanted. Choose the right soil composition. It should include clay, humus, peat, manure and charcoal. Also drain the sand. Transplant young palms into a new flowerpot every year. If the plant is more than 3 years old – every 4 years.

If the leaf dries up slightly, do not cut it off right away. Wait for it to wither completely. If the plant sheds more than 4 leaves, this means that it needs increased care.

In general, the fan palm is unpretentious to care for. You can grow it at home without much effort.
