Caring for a leather sofa and leather furniture at home
Do you have genuine leather furniture in your home? To maintain the appeal of this luxurious piece of furniture, you need to treat it with care. Proper care of your leather sofa will allow you to extend its life and preserve its aesthetics.
What causes leather furniture to deteriorate?
Natural material for making armchairs and sofas is very vulnerable. The main factors that lead to damage to such furniture are:
- direct sunlight;
- temperature drops;
- insufficient humidity in the room;
- any liquid, including water;
- exposure to abrasives, etc.
If the sofa is placed in direct sunlight or near a heat source (radiator), the leather may crack. Any impact with an abrasive leads to cracks or microcracks. Spilled liquid changes the structure of the material, due to which it loses its softness over time.
Leather furniture care: features
Leather furniture looks stylish and solid. But if you do not follow some of the rules of care, it will quickly lose its appearance. What are the features of caring for leather interior items? Here they are:
- correctly position the sofa or armchair made of leather: away from heat sources (at least 1,5 meters from a radiator or fireplace) and sunlight. Maintain air humidity at 65-70%, especially during the heating season;
- to keep the material soft, once every few months the surface of the furniture should be rubbed with oil (olive, castor) or glycerin. When the oil is absorbed into the skin, the residue must be removed with a dry flannel or cotton cloth;
- caring for leather furniture at home must include a weekly dry cleaning. It can be carried out with a dry cloth or a vacuum cleaner with a soft attachment. This will help clear the pores of the material from dust;
- wipe the sofa with a damp microfiber or sponge every two weeks. If dirt appears on the surface, use a soap solution. Baby or laundry soap is best. Be sure to wipe dry afterwards. When removing stains, never rub the skin, use gentle rotational movements;
- If liquid is spilled on the furniture, blot it immediately with a napkin or rag. Do not allow water, tea or juice to soak into the material. Alcohol will help remove stains (from coffee, wine, ink, etc.). Gently wipe the stain with a cloth dampened with alcohol. Use milk to care for fair skin.
If you adhere to these rules and protect leather furniture from negative factors (temperature changes, pets, spilled liquids, etc.), you will be able to preserve its luxury and aesthetics.
As you can see, even expensive interior items can be taken care of without much difficulty at home. Do not be lazy to give them enough time – and you will always be pleased to be at home in a beautiful environment.
