It would seem that we know everything about daily dental care. However, brushing your teeth twice a day may not protect you from the most common periodontal diseases, tooth decay and serious inflammation. Check what mistakes we make the most often and how to properly care for the oral cavity.

Clean teeth… what are they?

It has been known for a long time that healthy teeth and gums translate into the condition of the entire body. Inflammation in the mouth greatly increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The plaque that forms on the plaque is an excellent breeding ground for pathogenic bacteria which, causing inflammation and caries, can enter the bloodstream and thus the entire body.

In order to avoid chronic inflammation, it is necessary to implement comprehensive care of the entire oral cavity. Brushing your teeth in the morning and evening is not enough to avoid tooth decay, tartar build-up, gum disease, periodontitis or the problem of hypersensitivity.

Proper, daily oral hygiene should take into account:

● using an appropriate brush – it must be matched to individual needs. It cannot be too soft (inaccurate removal of plaque) or too hard (risk of gum irritation). The best solution is to choose a brush with medium bristles. In this way, the risk of bleeding and irritation is minimized,

● tooth brushing for at least 2 minutes – dentists recommend brushing your teeth after each meal. In this way, you can remove food residues from the interdental spaces on an ongoing basis, which are a breeding ground for bacteria,

● using a mouthwash – this action protects the enamel and soothes irritation of the gums. What’s more, it refreshes breath and has a bactericidal effect,

● tongue cleaning – the characteristic white coating is deposited on it. These are bacteria that can easily colonize the surrounding teeth and cause numerous diseases. In drugstores and pharmacies you can get a special tongue scraper, which is worth using every time you brush your teeth,

● flossing – brushing your teeth alone may not remove the food debris that often accumulates in tight gaps between your teeth. It is recommended to use floss not only after each washing, but also during the day. It is easy, quick and completely painless,

● use of an irrigator – facilitates even more thorough cleaning, which is especially important for people wearing orthodontic appliances. Its daily use prevents inflammation, improves the condition of the gums and effectively removes food debris from the interdental spaces.

According to statistics, we brush our teeth too briefly and too little thoroughly. This contributes to the development of numerous diseases that can be treated by the dentist. Unfortunately, sometimes without success, which results in the removal of the tooth. How to properly brush your teeth? It is worth starting brushing from the most difficult places, i.e. the molars. This way it is easier to glide with brushing from the rear to the front of the jaw. The movements should be rotational and the pressure applied moderate. Pressing the brush too hard can cause bleeding gums as well as damage to enamel, cementum and dentin. The operation should take approx. 2 minutes.

What is the risk of improper dental care?

Lack of proper dental hygiene, skipping tooth brushing or inaccurate removal of food debris from the interdental spaces may lead to the development of numerous diseases, including:

  1. demineralization,
  2. caries,
  3. tooth sensitivity,
  4. acid enamel erosion,
  5. gum inflammation and bleeding,
  6. paradontozy,
  7. exposing the necks of the teeth.
