Malignant neoplasms (commonly known as cancer) are one of the most common causes of death in Poland and in the world. This problem requires increased oncological vigilance not only in the case of doctors, but also of the patients themselves, as early detection of changes significantly increases the chance of a cure. That is why it is so important to raise public awareness of cancer and its symptoms.
The most common symptoms of neoplastic diseases
Tumors cause symptoms closely related to their location, disrupting the function of the systems and organs in which they develop, as well as general symptoms such as fever that lasts for weeks, significant weight loss, not related to diet and increased physical activity, or enlargement of the lymph nodes.
The symptoms of most cancers are non-specific, but due to the risks involved, it should always be attempted to exclude cancer as its cause, especially in people with risk factors. Moreover, they usually appear when the tumor grows larger and is therefore more advanced. Hence, in the case of a few common cancers, governments of many countries have introduced population-based screening programs aimed at detecting precancerous conditions or tumors in the early stages of development.
The symptoms of the most common malignant tumors are listed below:
– lung cancer: cough, feeling short of breath, haemoptysis, chest pain, recurrent pneumonia
– breast cancer: palpable lump, breast asymmetry, bloody nipple discharge, nipple retraction, orange peel symptom, lymphadenopathy under the armpit
– colorectal cancer: bloody stools, change in bowel rhythm, feeling of incomplete bowel movements, pencil-like stools, abdominal pain
– prostate cancer: difficulty urinating, intermittent flow of urine, frequent urge to urinate
– gastric cancer: pains and discomfort in the upper abdomen, nausea and vomiting, belching, rapidly appearing fullness and fullness with eating
– Laryngeal cancer: chronic hoarseness, difficulty and pain when swallowing, a tumor in the neck, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
– lymphomas and leukemias: anemia, easy bruising, recurrent infections
