Canada, like Europe, will be phasing out plastic from 2021. More and more often, customers go to the store with eco-bags and backpacks and less and less use plastic bags. A supermarket in Vancouver decided to shame the latter and released plastic bags for this.
The East West Market supermarket has set itself the task of minimizing the use of plastic bags. And for this it was decided to turn to such a human emotion as shame. This is how packages with embarrassing inscriptions appeared in the supermarket, which not everyone would dare to take.
The package costs 5 cents. After purchasing it, a customer of the store goes home with the inscriptions on the package “Ointment for warts”, “Taking care of the colon” or “Weird adult video store”.
“We wanted to come up with something funny, but also make people think,” says supermarket owner David Lee Quen. Initially, he hoped that this would reduce the use of disposable bags and increase their cost, but when this idea did not succeed, the decision was made to release packages that cause shame among customers.
However, it is worth noting that the supermarket had to face unforeseen circumstances – some customers specifically take new packages, because they really liked such an original idea.
