Can you tan with SPF cream?

It’s time to debunk one of the most enduring myths associated with the use of sunscreen cosmetics. Yes, products with SPF protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation, but do not interfere with getting the most desired holiday souvenir – a tan.

What is SPF

The phrase “I definitely won’t be able to tan with sunscreen” is often heard from the so-called SPF dissidents. That is, people who, despite all the persuasion and recommendations of dermatologists, do not want to use sunscreen even in the tropics. The claim that SPF does not tan is a myth that we want to finally debunk.

First, let’s remember what SPF is. This abbreviation stands for Sun Protection Factor – sun protection factor.

The numbers next to these letters on the packaging indicate the degree of protection against ultraviolet radiation (more specifically, from type B rays). When applied liberally to the skin, SPF provides the following levels of protection:
  • SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays;

  • SPF 30 — 97%;

  • SPF 50 — 98%.

Can you tan with SPF cream?

The unequivocal answer is yes, you can. As is clear from the above, there are simply no sunscreens with 100% protection. In addition, even the most careful of us do not use sunscreen exactly as we should. Namely, the following rules are not observed:

  1. apply the product at the rate of 2 ml per square centimeter of skin (about a third of a teaspoon on the face and a tablespoon on each part of the body);

  2. renew the cream every two hours and after each bath;

  3. treat all areas of the skin, including the parting on the head, and the most rapidly burning areas (nose, ears, forehead).

In addition, sun protection weakens as we stay in direct sunlight due to the fact that we sweat, touch the skin with our hands, and also due to the friction of clothing fabric.

And even if you are one of those rare people who take into account all these circumstances and maintain the protective coating in proper condition, it is still possible to tan using an SPF product. To do this, you just need to adhere to a certain scheme.
  1. In the first week of your stay at the beach, use the maximum protection factor SPF 50.

  2. Then you can reduce the degree of protection to SPF 30.

  3. Finally, when the skin adapts, switch to a tanning oil with an SPF of 15-20.

One “but”: this scheme is not suitable for owners of phototypes 1 and 2 (read here about what phototypes are and how to determine your own). People who belong to these phototypes, due to physiological characteristics, tan very poorly.
