Faced with the ever increasing number of cases of coronavirus infection, many people are looking for prevention and treatment on their own. Supporters of natural medicine suggest, among others, that oregano oil can protect us from falling ill with COVID-19. How much truth is there in this statement?
What are the properties of oregano oil?
Oregano oil is available in bottles of various contents. It is a source of thymol and carvacrol, which have antifungal and antibacterial properties. In addition, we can find B vitamins, as well as vitamins C and K, flavonoids and minerals such as zinc, magnesium, iron, calcium and potassium. It is therefore a source of essential substances for the proper functioning of the body.
This oil inhibits the growth of various microorganisms, thus preventing food poisoning, colds and flu. According to some opinions, its effect may be stronger than that of some antibiotics.
- Check: How to provide first aid so as not to get infected with the coronavirus?
According to current research, oregano oil does not protect humans against falling ill with COVID-19. Due to the lack of scientific evidence, it is difficult to give a definite answer.
Also, no antibiotics are effective in treating the coronavirus. Only use antibiotics in the case of bacterial infections!
The decision about treatment is always made by the doctor. Since COVID-19 is a viral infection, treatment at the moment is mainly about relieving symptoms, thus lowering the fever or relieving breathing problems. Treatment may also address possible complications. So far, no drug has been invented to prevent or treat COVID-19.
How can you protect yourself from becoming infected?
Contrary to appearances, the ways to avoid getting COVID-19 are very simple:
- strengthen your immunity – take care of a healthy, well-balanced diet (rich in fruits and vegetables), avoid processed products, stay hydrated, get enough sleep;
- Stay home if you can – isolating yourself from people is the easiest way to avoid COVID-19
- wash your hands often, and if you are unable to do so, use an alcohol-based disinfectant (minimum 70%);
- wash and disinfect surfaces that you touch (e.g. telephone, door handles);
- when leaving the house, remember about the mask and gloves;
- keep a safe distance from the interlocutor, i.e. approx. 2 m – remember that the coronavirus is transmitted by droplets;
- cover your face with your elbow when you sneeze or cough;
- give up smoking and drinking alcohol;
- always disinfect the phone before a meal, and preferably put it aside when eating;
- do not touch your eyes, nose and mouth – this way it makes it easier for the coronavirus to enter the body.

Searching for information related to the coronavirus in imported sources is just as important as the prevention of COVID-19.
