In a recent video posted on Twitter, experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) answered questions about the Omikron variant. One of the topics was the so-called long COVID-19, i.e. long-term symptoms of coronavirus infection. As they emphasized, the long-term effects of COVID-19 infection can be very dangerous and affect virtually every organ in our body.

Long COVID-19 can affect both those who have required hospitalization for infection and those who have passed the infection asymptomatically or mildly. Symptoms can range from chronic fatigue, shortness of breath and lung problems to heart disease, but due to the short time since Omicron appeared, many of them are yet to be understood.

WHO estimates that the likelihood of long-term COVID-19 following infection with Omicron is high (compared to other variants), but research is still needed on this subject. Due to the lack of a complete picture of the situation, the UN health agency continues to call for action to reduce the transmission of the coronavirus because “prevention is better than any short-term and long-term effects of COVID-19 infection«.

What is long COVID-19?
