Good day. I am 27 years old and currently in the third month of pregnancy. Everything is fine, my research is correct. However, I have one question. Can you eat blue cheese in pregnancy? I’ve heard some conflicting opinions on this before, and I’d like some professional medical opinion on eating blue cheese while pregnant. Of course, I can give up eating it and it’s not a problem for me, but I really like the taste, so I would like to know if blue cheese is dangerous in pregnancy?

I also found information that they are types of blue cheese in pregnancywhich are safe and yet I could reach for them. Is it right and I could eat blue cheese while pregnant, if it were some chosen, safe types of cheese? I am also interested in heat treatment – if it is, for example, a cooked pasta sauce or a casserole, then I can eat blue cheese while pregnant and it will not be a problem? I am also interested in why it is impossible to eat blue cheese during pregnancy? There are many such myths, and I would like to hear some solid information on the reasons why blue cheese can be dangerous to the fetus.

The doctor explains whether pregnant women can eat blue cheese

Cheeses that should not be eaten during pregnancy include:

  1. soft cheeses with a white rind, such as brie, camembert, ripened blue goat cheeses, such as chèvre. You can eat it only if it has been heat treated;
  2. soft, blue blue cheese, e.g. Danish blue cheese, roquefort, gorgonzola. Like the above, they can only be eaten after heat treatment – so as a cooked sauce, blue cheese could be allowed to eat.

These cheeses are forbidden as they have a pH higher than hard cheeses and contain more moisture, which means that bacteria such as e.g. Listeria monocytogenes. Listeriosis is a very rare disease, but even a minor illness in a pregnant woman can cause miscarriage, death of the fetus or severe congenital disease of the fetus. All hard cheeses such as cheddar, parmesan, stilton.

Even if they are made of unpasteurized milk – they do not contain the same amount of water as soft cheeses, so there is a low probability that bacteria will harbor there. Cheeses such as cottage cheese, cottage cheese, mozzarella, feta, cream cheese, ricotta, halloumi, highly processed cheese, goat cheese can be eaten without fear.

In addition to the above-mentioned products, during pregnancy, you should also not eat raw, undercooked eggs, all types of pates, including vegetarian ones, liver, raw or undercooked meat, and be careful with cold cuts that have not been boiled, but smoked, such as salami, prosciutto, chorizo ​​- check the messages on the packaging. Fish that should not be eaten during pregnancy include: shark, swordfish, marlin, raw fish (sushi). Seafood such as mussels, lobster, crab, shrimp, scallops should only be eaten cooked, never raw or undercooked! Only UHT milk should be consumed during pregnancy.

In addition to food that should not be eaten, it is worth remembering to supplement some vitamins: 400mcg of folic acid (start already 12 weeks before pregnancy!), Vitamin D, especially in the period from September to March. DO NOT take vitamin A supplements, high-dose multivitamin supplements, or fish liver oils (fish oil).
