Potential value
The avocado seed contains a lot of minerals, including potassium, magnesium and vitamins such as folic acid, vitamin A, E, and B vitamins. It is also extremely rich in soluble dietary fiber. Additionally, it includes about 70 percent more antioxidants than the fruit itself, hence it has become a point of interest for scientists. Many proponents of natural treatments have touted its wide-ranging health benefits, from diarrhea relief to cancer treatment.
Effect on health
In South America, avocado seed powder is recommended as a remedy for digestive and intestinal problems. This effect is seen in the high fiber content of the soluble fraction. As we know from numerous studies, this dietary component helps to lower blood cholesterol levels, slows down the absorption of glucose and has a beneficial effect on the circulatory system. The richness of vitamins A and E, as well as antioxidants in avocado seed, can have a positive effect on the skin and eyes, but it can also potentially improve the functioning of the immune system. Avocado seed also appears to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibacterial effects, which could be used to treat infections. Research on the seed extract, and more precisely on the compound contained in it avocatin B, have shown to be effective against acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. Published in 2015 in Journal Cancer Research indicated that in laboratory studies in which the effectiveness of 800 compounds in the fight against AML was checked, avocatin B was the most effective. Additionally, this substance did not affect healthy cells, so it has no side effects. Similar reports are coming from the University of Waterloo.
No approval
Avocado seed seems to be a wonderful remedy for many ailments. So there are more and more tips and instructional videos on how to prepare the seed for consumption and in what form to eat it. It is recommended to add to cocktails or make tea from it. However, it should be borne in mind that the tests, for example in the case of leukemia, analyze the seed extract. There is no question of eating the whole stone as such. There are no clear reports as to whether eating it is safe for health. Apart from that research on its effects on health is in the realm of laboratory analysis. Clinical observations are still required for the approval of medicinal products derived from avocado seeds. It is known that avocado seeds contain compounds that are inedible for humans. Therefore, additional studies on the safety of its consumption are necessary. That is why specialists warn against introducing seeds into your diet.
Use the pit
However, the stone can be used in a number of other ways. You can put the seed in the prepared guacamole so that it does not turn brown. The antioxidants contained in the stone protect against oxidation. It is also great as a natural dye for fabrics. Just pour water over the chopped skin and dried seeds and leave it for an hour. Later, you only need to soak the fabric for a long time, depending on how strong the shade of pink (pink, not green) you want to get. You can also use the dried avocado seed to make a home scrub. Grate it on a grater and mix it with e.g. banana, avocado pulp, lemon juice and olive oil, and you have the perfect cleansing mask ready. You can also add grated avocado seed to your shampoo to strengthen and soften your hair.
There are many ways to use the stone. You do not have to waste it at all, but it is better to wait with eating it until scientists check whether it is safe for our health.
