Can there be a temperature after polio vaccination: how many days it lasts

The temperature sometimes rises after polio vaccination, parents need to be prepared for this. You also need to be aware of other possible side effects.

Could there be a temperature

Polio vaccination is considered one of the most harmless, but the fact is that in parallel with it, according to the general schedule, DPT vaccination is also often given, but it already causes a rise in temperature. In this case, the temperature rises 1-14 days after vaccination and reaches a maximum of 37,5 ° C.

Temperature sometimes rises after polio vaccination

So, fever after polio vaccination can occur, but very rarely. According to Russian pediatricians, this happens in 1-4% of cases. The rise in temperature is most likely either a reaction to another vaccine, or a symptom of ARVI, which has arisen against the background of a weakened body after vaccination.

How many days does the temperature last

A low temperature of up to 37,4 ° C in a normal situation lasts a maximum of 1-2 days. It does not require additional treatment, you do not need to knock it down.

Here are some of the side effects that polio vaccination can cause:

  • Redness. Slight redness may occur at the injection site if the vaccine was given by injection. It passes quickly and without treatment.
  • Diarrhea. It happens only after vaccination in the form of drops. This is usually not full-fledged diarrhea, but simply more frequent bowel movements. Happens in children under 1 year of age. Lasts 1-2 days and goes away without treatment.
  • Vomit. It happens after taking drops, if the baby does not want to swallow them. Despite vomiting, the vaccine is considered complete and is not repeated.

After vaccination, the child cannot be watered and fed for 2 hours. You can walk with your baby and bathe him if this vaccine does not coincide with others.

How to prepare for vaccination

The risk of side effects can be minimized by properly preparing for vaccination. The main thing, remember, the vaccine can only be given to a completely healthy child. If in doubt, ask your doctor to postpone the procedure. After vaccination, immunity weakens and there is a risk of worsening the disease.

If a child has any type of allergic reaction, an immunologist should be consulted before vaccination.

Another important stage of preparation is the delivery of a general analysis of urine and blood. Based on the test results, the doctor will give a referral for vaccination.

Discuss all possible complications with your pediatrician in advance. If something goes wrong, call your pediatrician or go to the clinic without delay.
