Can pregnant women sleep on their backs or on the floor

While waiting for the baby, I really do not want to harm him. Even questions that you usually don’t ask yourself are becoming topical. For example, in what position to sleep or on what surface. And this is by no means an idle interest. At different times, you need to sleep in different ways.

The full term for bearing a child is 38-40 weeks. During this time, the fetus is fully formed for independent life. Sleep recommendations may vary depending on the length of your pregnancy. There are restrictions associated with the need to change the usual way of life.

When asked if pregnant women can sleep on their side, the answer is yes, this is the most comfortable position.

The main condition is that sleep in the process of maturation of the unborn baby should be complete and comfortable. There are some general guidelines for sleeping position:

1. At the beginning of pregnancy, until the 12th week, you can sleep in almost any comfortable position, since the size of the fetus is still small.

2. From the 13th week, sleep on the back should be excluded: the baby’s pressure on the internal organs increases and there is a likelihood of squeezing the inferior vena cava passing through the entire spine. Doctors note that this sleeping position is associated with the risk of stillbirth.

3. In the third trimester, it is best to sleep on the left side, as the kidney is compressed on the right side.

You cannot sleep on your stomach during pregnancy: in this position, there is strong pressure on the fetus. However, it is also disastrously inconvenient.

When looking for a comfortable position, pay attention to how you are feeling. If, lying on your side or back, you feel that your condition is worsening, unpleasant symptoms begin to appear, you should choose a different position.

The sleeping position should be pleasant and comfortable for both mother and baby. If your child starts pushing aggressively when you are in bed, they may not like your position.

Can a pregnant woman sleep on the floor?

When asked if pregnant women can sleep on their back or stomach, find a suitable place to sleep. There are no exact and strict criteria for choosing a mattress, as well as prohibitions to sleep on a flat hard surface.

When choosing a place for a good rest, consider several factors:

  • If you buy a new mattress, it is better to choose the orthopedic version of medium hardness, as this will allow you to correctly distribute the load along the spine.

  • If you want to sleep on the floor, put pillows under your stomach and legs so that not only you, but also your child is comfortable.

The main thing is that the sleep of the expectant mother is long and comfortable. If, waking up, you feel that your legs or arms are numb – change the mattress or posture, buy a special pillow for pregnant women.

If you still have doubts about the best position to sleep in, consult your gynecologist.
