Can pregnant women drink coffee: pros and cons

Coffee is a drink that has both positive and negative effects on the body. Therefore, it is impossible to unequivocally answer the question: is it possible for pregnant women to drink coffee. It depends on a number of factors.

Contraindications for the use of this tonic drink are:

  • early pregnancy;
  • the threat of premature birth;
  • high blood pressure;
  • sleep disturbance;
  • increased irritability and irritability of the mother;
  • the presence of abnormalities in the development of the fetus.

If these contraindications do not apply to you, and the pregnancy is proceeding normally, you can indulge yourself with a cup of coffee. It should not be soluble, but natural, brewed from high-quality ground grains.

A woman carrying a baby can drink no more than 2 cups of a weak drink per day. It is best to dilute it with milk or cream. This will help replenish the calcium stores needed for the baby’s development.

Drinking coffee in moderation will help you get rid of:

  • edema, as it has a diuretic effect;
  • fatigue, because it has a tonic effect;
  • constipation, because it has a slight laxative effect;
  • the appearance of extra pounds, because the drink dulls the feeling of hunger.

Despite these positive qualities, coffee should not be overused.

This drink has properties that have a bad effect on the body of a pregnant woman and her baby:

  • Constricts blood vessels, which leads to inadequate blood supply to the placenta. This can cause anemia and reduce the amount of oxygen and nutrients available to your baby.
  • It leads to an increase in the number of urination, which promotes the excretion of calcium from the body. Its deficiency will negatively affect not only the health of the fetus, but also the condition of the mother.
  • Increases pressure in the arteries, which often leads to gestosis in a pregnant woman.
  • Prevents the fetus from gaining weight normally. This can negatively affect the well-being and development of the baby after birth.

If the expectant mother still plans to consume coffee, she needs to discuss this issue with her attending physician and adhere to the recommendations given to him.

The best solution to this problem is to replace this drink with fruit drink, juice or chicory. They will not harm either mom or baby.
