Can low cholesterol have a negative effect on health? Is too low cholesterol a cause for concern? Is this a cause for panic? Should my cholesterol result be discussed with my doctor? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

Is low cholesterol a cause for concern?

Good morning, I would like to ask if low cholesterol can be dangerous to health? There is a lot of talk about the reverse situation and its health implications, but should too low cholesterol be a concern as well? I am asking because recently I did some tests and everything was normal for me, at the beginning I was even glad that my cholesterol was 95, with the norm from 120, but after a while I started to wonder if this is also a problem, since cholesterol standard however, it was given.

I would like to add that I also have LDL cholesterol below normal and HDL cholesterol below normal. I haven’t been to the doctor yet, because my other results are very good, but I am bothered by this low cholesterol level. Would be grateful for an explanation as to whether low cholesterol is a serious concern, or if I am just panicking and it is nothing out of the ordinary. I would like to add that I try to eat healthy, I often use physical activity and, apart from low cholesterol, I have never had any special health problems.

The doctor explains whether low cholesterol is a cause for panic

Cholesterol, which the doctor pays attention to, and whose high result raises concerns about the occurrence of atherosclerosis, which is an important risk factor, including heart attack. The doctor usually pays attention to the level of LDL and HDL cholesterol. LDL is considered the “bad” cholesterol because it causes atherosclerosis, making them resistant to dilatation and narrower. HDL, in turn, is considered “good” cholesterol because it traps LDL-cholesterol and carries it back to the liver, preventing it from accumulating in the walls of the vessels causing them atherosclerosis.

In order to prevent hypercholesterolaemia and its negative effects on the human body, change the diet: low in salt, based on vegetables, fruit and whole grains, low in animal fats, consume “good” fats, i.e. polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA or in PUFA), i.e. omga-3 and omega-6. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in products such as salmon, herring, mackerel, linseed oil, some nuts, including walnuts, seeds. Omega-6 fatty acids they are more widespread and are found in many vegetable oils such as sunflower, grape seed, soybean, corn, rapeseed, seeds and nuts.

Low cholesterol shouldn’t be a worry when it comes to LDL cholesterol. On the other hand, HDL cholesterol is desirable to have higher values because of its beneficial effects in the body. In addition to eating the above-mentioned foods, you should also exercise regularly, stop smoking if you have smoked before; reduce body weight if you are overweight or obese. Desirable HDL-cholesterol values are 60 mg / dL or more, especially if the patient suffers from hypertension or other cardiovascular diseases.
