Can I eat oscypek during pregnancy? Can oscypek cause disease? Is it a threat to pregnancy and the baby? Can eating oscypek during pregnancy result in listeriosis? What tests should be performed to rule out the disease? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
Can you eat oscypek during pregnancy?
Good day. I have an urgent question regarding the pregnancy I am in. Can you consume oscypek during pregnancy? This is very important to me because I am currently in the fifth month and it is only now that I found out that it is on the same list as blue cheeses and oscypek during pregnancy is reportedly not recommended. Meanwhile, two weeks ago I ate oscypek, which my friend brought straight from the mountains. Now I’m starting to get a little paranoid because I find all kinds of information about effects of eating oscypek in pregnancy.
I found out that when you eat oscypek you can get listeriosis while pregnant – is it really true and can I be sick? Or maybe eating oscypek during pregnancy is not that threatening and I panic unnecessarily? It was only the one time I ate a piece of oscypek while pregnant, it never happened to me before or after. Can even such a one-time consumption of oscypek during pregnancy result in listeriosis? What tests should I do now to somehow check it or rule it out? And what if I have listeriosis after eating oscypek – how is it treated? Is it dangerous?
The doctor explains whether it is possible to eat oscypek when pregnant
Oscypek, if it has been heat-treated and made from UHT milk, can be eaten during pregnancy. Cheeses that should not be eaten during pregnancy include:
- soft cheeses with a white rind, such as brie, camembert, and ripened blue goat cheeses, such as chèvre. They can only be eaten if they have been heat treated.
- soft, blue cheeses, e.g. Roquefort, Gorgonzola. As above, they can only be eaten after heat treatment.
These cheeses are forbidden because their pH is higher than that of hard cheeses and they contain more moisture, which means that bacteria such as Listeria can grow there. Listeriosis is a very rare disease, but even a minor infection in a pregnant woman can cause miscarriage, fetal death or severe congenital disease of the fetus.
All hard cheeses such as cheddar, parmesan and stilton can be eaten without fear during pregnancy. Even if they are made from unpasteurized milk, they do not contain the same amount of water as soft cheeses, so there is a low probability that bacteria will harbor there. Cheeses such as: cottage cheese, cottage cheese, mozzarella, feta, cream cheese, ricotta, halloumi, highly processed cheese, goat cheese can be eaten without fear.
In addition to the above-mentioned products, during pregnancy, you should also not eat raw, undercooked eggs, all types of pates, including vegetarian ones, liver, raw or undercooked meat, and be careful with smoked meats that have not been boiled, but smoked, such as salami, prosciutto, chorizo - check the messages on the packaging. Fish that should not be eaten during pregnancy include: shark, swordfish, marlin, raw fish (sushi). Seafood such as mussels, lobster, crab, shrimps, scallops should only be eaten cooked, never raw or undercooked! Only UHT milk should be consumed during pregnancy.
In addition to food that should not be eaten, it is worth remembering to supplement some vitamins: 400 mcg of folic acid (start already 12 weeks before pregnancy!), Vitamin D, especially in the period from September to March. DO NOT take vitamin A supplements, high-dose multivitamin supplements, or fish liver oils (fish oil).
