A person suffering from COVID-19 infects others only at a certain stage of the disease, and the person who has suffered the infection develops immunity to the coronavirus. Does this mean that it is no longer a threat? Prof. Włodzimierz Gut from the Department of Virology of the National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene.

Coronavirus: By When Do We Infect?

Let’s not be afraid of catching the coronavirus from a healer – says in an interview for PAP Prof. Włodzimierz Gut.

They infect the environment most often by people who are in the active phase of infection, i.e. when the coronavirus multiplies in their bodies. Professor Gut explains that a sick person can infect others for 10-14 days, but is most contagious on days 6 and 7 of infection.

– It is worth knowing that at the beginning of the infection, i.e. 2-3 days after catching the virus, we do not infect others yet, because the virus has not yet multiplied in our country – says Prof. Włodzimierz Gut.

We can confirm whether we are infected at all by performing a molecular RT-PCR test or an antigen test.

Coronavirus: How Long Does Immunity Last?

At the same time, the immune system of anyone who has already contracted COVID-19 produces antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which means that it should not become infected again (however, it should be noted here that it is possible to re-infection – so far such cases in many countries, scientists are looking closely at them). The latest research by Oxford University Hospitals scientists who studied medical staff employed in the university’s hospitals shows that immunity does not decline for at least six months.

– We do not know yet how long the body’s resistance to the new coronavirus persists (after its disease, after immunization or after treatment with plasma), but I would not be surprised if it turned out that in this case it will be similar to others, the previously known coronaviruses, in the case of which immunity lasts up to 3 years. Of course, there may be significant individual differences in this matter, e.g. in people with impaired immunity, the period of protection may be much shorter – assessed Prof. Włodzimierz Gut.

The serological test result will tell us whether or not we have acquired immunity. On its basis, you can determine whether we have immune antibodies in our blood and what their level and type are. Prof. Włodzimierz Gut reminds that such tests are performed, among others, by in potential plasma donors for the treatment of patients with severe forms of COVID-19.
