Can coronavirus be transmitted through food (WHO response)

Recently, a message appeared that traces of the SARS-CoV-2 virus were found on frozen foods.

The incident took place in the city of Shenzhen in southern China. There, traces of coronavirus were found on chicken wings brought from Brazil. This news quickly spread around the world and caused a flurry of fears.

Since the beginning of June, China has been carrying out expertise on all imported products. The coronavirus was also previously detected in a package with frozen shrimp. However, WHO emphasizes that these particles are not necessarily the virus itself, which is capable of infecting a person, but probably only RNA fragments of an already inactive virus.

And due to the importance of the topic, WHO decided to make a separate statement about the ability of SARS-CoV-2 to spread through products.

For example, Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergencies program, said that “people can feel comfortable and safe” about SARS-CoV-2 infectable food, according to news.liga.net.

He noted that it is theoretically possible to catch a virus that would have hitherto stayed on frozen food, but so far such cases are not known.

It was also stated at a briefing by the management of the World Health Organization that “There is no evidence that food or the food chain is involved in the transmission of this virus. People should not be afraid of food or food packaging, food processing and delivery. ”

But at the same time, WHO once again voiced a reminder of the need to wash hands with soap and be sure to thermally process meat semi-finished products.

Be healthy!

We will remind, earlier we told about quarantine wine, which was released by Hollywood stars, as well as what unusual cakes have become popular in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
