Is Clotrimazolum safe for pregnant women? Can Clotrimazolum harm my baby? Should the ointment be applied to the affected areas? Can you use the ointment while pregnant? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
Can Clotrimazolum be used during pregnancy?
Hello. I am 29 years old and 23 weeks pregnant. I have a problem that I wanted to consult, I am under the constant care of a gynecologist, but my appointment is only in two weeks, and I cannot contact my specialist. For several days I have had a problem with the area of intimate places, namely I feel itchy, I also have yellow vaginal discharge fortunately without any smelling smooth texture. Before pregnancy, I had this kind of problems, I often had bacterial infections, but also allergic reactions, for example to heavily perfumed body care cosmetics.
Before getting pregnant, when I had such ailments, I used topical Clotrimazolum, I wonder if it can be used Clotrimazolum in pregnancy? It is an over-the-counter remedy, so I would not need a doctor’s appointment, but I am afraid that Clotrimazolum may be harmful to my child, despite the fact that it is an ointment to be applied to the affected area. How is it really can I take Clotrimazolum when pregnant? I am asking for reliable advice.
The doctor advises whether you can use Clotrimazolum during pregnancy
Clotrimazolum is an antifungal medicine that contains the active substance clotrimazole. Depending on the place where it is to be applied, it is available in various forms such as ointment, cream, liquid, drops or vaginal tablets. Clotrimazole as an imidazole derivative is widely used in treating fungal infections. Demonstrates fungistatic and fungicidal activity, among others against dermatophytes, yeasts, Cryptococcus neoformans, Malassezia, or Aspergillus. It is also available over the counter in some forms. Vaginal tablets are prescribed by a doctor by prescription.
The drug works by disrupting the permeability of the fungal cell membrane by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, which leads to the destruction of their cells. Clotrimazole is used, inter alia, in in fungal inflammation of the mucous membranes of the genitals caused by yeasts, in mycosis of the skin surface caused by dermatophytes (mycosis of the feet, body, interdigital mycosis, in tinea pedis with secondary infection, among others in athlete’s foot, tinea versicolor, fungal eyelid margin inflammation Kotrimazole drops is given for fungal infections of the outer and middle ear. Remember to use the medicine exactly as instructed on this leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Use of clotrimazole in pregnancy especially in the first trimester it is not recommended. It is allowed to take the drug at a later stage of pregnancy, when it is necessary and only on the recommendation of a doctor. The drug should also not be used during breastfeeding, as the active substance and its metabolites pass into breast milk. Do not use the drug in case of hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation. I suggest you consult a gynecologist and obstetrician who, after getting to know the patient, will decide on further treatment and prescribe the necessary and safe treatment.
