Can a nasal staphylococcal infection be treated? What does staphylococcus on a nasal swab mean? What is the treatment like and how effective is it? Can the disease come back after the end of treatment? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
What is the treatment of staphylococcus in the nose?
Hello. I am 45 years old and recently found out that I do staphylococcus in the nose. For a long time, maybe several months, I have been tired of a relapsing person purulent rhinitis, the discharge is thick, it has a greenish-yellow color, it is very difficult for me to get rid of it, I cannot breathe freely, and it is almost a miracle to sniff at once. I consulted my GP, who assigned me drops to thin the discharge, they help, but for a short time.
Every now and then I do inhalation of sea salt and herbal solution, but it all works for a week two and then the infection comes back. The doctor ordered me to take a nasal swab and it turned out that I had staphylococcus in my nose. What does this mean exactly? Can a staphylococcus in the nose be treated? If so, what does the treatment look like and what is its effectiveness? I am also wondering if the staphylococcus in the nose can still come back after the treatment is over.
A friend advised me to go to an ENT specialist who will order me Sinus ultrasoundI guess that’s a good idea. I am asking for a reliable answer on how to proceed in the case of staphylococcus in the nose.
The doctor explains the course of treatment of staphylococcus
Madam, about 20% of the population is a permanent carrier golden staphylococcus (S. aureus). The presence in the nasal cavity is characteristic of the bacteria. For asymptomatic carriers, treatment is not required, unless they are healthcare professionals, immunocompromised individuals, or MRSA infection. In the case of symptomatic carriers, treatment is most appropriate. The symptom mentioned by you, i.e. purulent runny nose, especially recurrent, with a greenish-yellow color, may suggest a bacterial etiology, including staphylococcal.
In addition to the identification of the bacteria, an antibiotic should also be performed to match the appropriate antibiotic. After receiving the result, you should visit your doctor for treatment. Regarding the question of relapse, yes, staphylococcus can relapse despite treatment. When it comes to consultation with an otolaryngologist, it is definitely worth visiting, because in your case you should also take into account chronic sinusitis. However, I think that a sinus CT scan will be a better solution instead of an ultrasound, although the appropriate diagnostic procedure and possible treatment will be ordered by an ENT specialist.
