What is a breast fibroma? Could such a change be malicious? What is the treatment of fibroma? Should such changes be cut? Does a fibroma require the entire breast to be removed? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

Can lesions like breast fibroma be malignant?

Hello, I’m 35 years old and recently my gynecologist ordered me to do breast ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound. I did the latter and it turned out all right – the doctor had no objections. When it comes to breast ultrasound, the doctor diagnosed a small-size fibroma. He ordered him to see his attending physician, but at the same time told him not to worry. After such a message, I can’t help but worry. Visit the gynecologist in two weeks, and I nervously browse the Internet for information.

I felt sick when I came to the articles about breast cancer and malignant tumors and decided not to read anymore. However, it didn’t make me wait for the visit and not worry at all. I wonder if fibroma in the breast can be malicious? What is this fibroma really? How is it treated breast fibroma? Will it have to be cut? Is the breast removed? Maybe I’m already panicking a little, but I’m terribly nervous before visiting the gynecologist and what he tells me.

There were no breast tumors in my family. I got regular checkups and didn’t have any problems even while breastfeeding my babies. Please let me know if a breast fibroma can be malignant?

The doctor explains what a breast fibroma is

Madam, fibroma is a benign neoplasm, so don’t worry. Fibromas arise from connective tissue cells that have mutated and began to divide rapidly to form a tumor. Fibromas, due to the fact that they are benign neoplasms, do not have the ability to metastasize and invade adjacent tissues. This does not mean, however, that they are completely indifferent to the body, because increasing their size they put pressure on adjacent tissues or organs. In the case of the breast, it does not matter much, especially if the tumor is detected quickly.

Ultrasound examination makes it possible to make an initial diagnosis, although it cannot be said based on its result that the tumor is 100% fibroma. In order to make a specific diagnosis, the tumor should be subjected to a histopathological examination. The pathomorphologist examines the tumor specimens under a microscope, thanks to which he is able to determine exactly what type of tumor the detected tumor is. Of course, before the tumor is examined by a pathologist, it must be excised by a surgeon.

It can be excised completely or in parts during a so-called mammotomy biopsy. Both treatments are painless thanks to the applied anesthesia. Unfortunately, it happens that a tumor that looks benign on ultrasound turns out to be cancer, i.e. a malignant tumor. Treatment of breast cancer depends on its size, infiltration of adjacent structures and the presence of possible metastases.

If I were you, I would not be stressed by the initial diagnosis, but I believe that the tumor should be excised to make sure that it is benign.
