History of Campo Viejo wine

Campo Viejo was founded in 1959 by winemakers Beristain and Ortihuela, who lived in Spain. The second spent his childhood in the village of El Villar de Arnedo. From time immemorial it has been called Campo Viejo, or Old Plot. Hence the name alcohol. The company was the first to bottle the drink in “Rioja bottles” to distinguish itself from other Spanish wines.

At first, the farm was small, but as time went on, production expanded. Demand gave rise to supply, in 1969 they began to build a new large plant, in parallel developing the distribution of products. Already in the 1970s, it appeared on the shelves of the vast majority of stores in Spain and on spreads of wine lists in establishments.

In 1973, the company changed the packaging design. Now the bottles in them were located not vertically, but horizontally. This solution allows the wine to come into direct contact with the cork, as there is no air space left between them.

Wine retains its properties longer because the risk of oxidizing prematurely is reduced. By the mid-1970s, the company entered the world market, and by the end – to receive awards in competitive programs.

In the 1990-2000s, the company began to work hard on improving the drink and using environmentally friendly technologies in production. As an example, it is rational to consume water resources.

In 1995, Campo Viejo was among the first to become the owner of the ISO 9000 quality certificate. Already in 2003, a new factory was opened, the equipment of which met the strictest environmental requirements. In 2012, the companies were awarded the Carbon Neutral Certificate. She became the first owner.

The wine matures in barrels made of combined oak. Breeds from France and America are used. Thus, the drink acquires a complex aroma of vanilla, coconut, spicy and woody notes.

Although the equipment at the enterprise is modernized, manufacturing technologies remain traditional. The event is extremely responsible and painstaking, but the result is worth it: Campo Viejo acquires a balanced, unlike anything taste.

The farm is located 20 minutes from the capital of Rioja – Logroño. Its plots with vines occupy an impressive territory of three sub-regions: Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja. The ripening process of the berries is carefully monitored according to a pre-compiled manual for each vineyard. It describes in detail how to care for the varieties of Tempranillo (75% of the total volume of fruits), Viura, Parellada, Mazuelo, or Carinera, Macabeo, Garnach, or Garnacha and others.
