The herbaceous plant campanula has recently been gaining great popularity in floriculture. This delicate flower is popularly called “the bride and groom”; it can decorate any interior with its beauty. There is a belief that the plant brings happiness and prosperity to the house, therefore in ancient times it was given to newlyweds on their wedding day, it was believed that it helps to make the family strong.
Campanula, called the “bride and groom” flower, has thin shoots no more than 30 cm long, hanging down and forming a dense green cap, so the plant is considered ampelous and is best placed in hanging pots. Flowers form at the tips of the shoots, reach up to 4 cm in diameter and form a very dense halo of small bells.
As a rule, the “bride” blooms with white flowers, and the “groom” has inflorescences with blue tints. In order for the campanula to develop well and bloom profusely, it is better to plant two flowers together in one pot: “the bride and groom.” In order for the plants to please with long flowering, they must be properly looked after.
- Timely watering – 2-3 times a week;
- During the period of growth and flowering, complex fertilizers are needed;
- Remove dried flowers and stems regularly;
- For the winter, the upper shoots are completely cut off, leaving 10 cm above the soil.
If the campanula does not have enough light, its shoots begin to stretch out and lose their decorative appearance. In winter, she needs a temperature of up to 15 degrees, so it is best to take her out to the veranda or balcony
“The bride and groom” are not whimsical to high air humidity, but in heat and drought, they should be regularly sprayed. Water for watering a flower should be settled and at room temperature.
The plant grows well in loose soil, this allows its roots to breathe and develop well. It is necessary to replant the bell in the spring before active growth begins in a wide pot. The denser its roots are, the more abundantly it will bloom.
For planting, you can prepare the soil yourself by mixing in equal parts leafy soil, peat, humus and coarse sand or buy ready-made soil for indoor plants
There are several ways to breed campanula:
- By dividing the bush. In early spring, remove the flower from the pot, divide it into several parts with a knife. The earth must not be shaken off, otherwise the delicate roots can be damaged. Plant each part in a small pot, do not water abundantly in the first month, once a week is enough.
- Cuttings. The shoots from the lower part of the plant are used, which are placed in a sand-peat mixture and are not watered, but only sprayed before rooting. When the shoots reach a length of 7-10 cm, they must be pinned in order to induce the growth of the lateral stems. This method is considered the simplest, because cuttings planted in summer will already bloom in January.
- Seeds. Small plant seeds are spread over the entire surface of the soil in a container and lightly sprinkled with soil. The container is covered with a film, periodically opened so that condensation does not accumulate, and is sprayed with warm water. When the seedlings grow to 10 cm, it is pinched and planted in a pot.
The culture is not too picky about the soil, but for active growth and abundant flowering, it needs bright, slightly diffused light.
With excessive waterlogging of the soil, the bush can become infected with gray rot. Root and stems rot, and the plant becomes lethargic with a rotten smell. If the disease is detected in time, then the bush can be saved. Rotten stems should be removed from the flower and transplanted into fresh soil. If the air is too dry, the culture can become infected with spider mites or aphids. To get rid of pests, the culture must be treated with insecticidal preparations.
If the leaves quickly turn yellow and fall off, this indicates that the plant has been attacked by pests.
With the help of the gentle campaign “Bride and Groom”, you can arrange not only summer verandas, window sills, but also flower beds in the garden area. If you provide good conditions and care, they will endow with a lush scattering of delicate and beautiful flowers, turning the home into a fabulous garden.
