Calperos hard capsules are taken in the case of an increased need for calcium. Two forms of Calperos 500 and Calperos 1000 are available on the pharmaceutical market. How do they work on the body? Are there any contraindications to their use?
Calperos – action
Calperos works through the properties of the calcium carbonate contained in the hard capsules. Ionizing calcium, the source of which are tablets, is responsible for the formation and mineralization of bone tissue. In addition, it is responsible for the proper nerve conduction of striated muscles, and also maintains the correct electrolyte balance in the body, including the action of the heart and blood clotting.
- What is a blood clotting disorder?
Thanks to calcium that acts as a messenger, enzymes can transform and take part in various processes that affect the functioning of the entire body. In addition, it is worth mentioning the anti-inflammatory, anti-swelling and anti-allergic properties of calcium.
Calperos – composition
Calperos 500 with 200 mg of calcium ions and Calperos 1000 with 400 mg of calcium ions are available on the pharmaceutical market. The excipients in both preparations are identical. These include: magnesium stearate and talc. However, the composition of gelatin capsules includes:
- Titanium dioxide (E 171)
- Indigotine (E 132),
- Gelatine.
Calperos – in what situations should it be used?
The main indications for taking Calperos are:
- Calcium deficiencies, especially in children and adolescents as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women,
- No products in the diet rich in calcium,
- Disorders of calcium reabsorption from the renal tubules,
- Low blood calcium levels with high phosphorus levels in patients with renal insufficiency (e.g. undergoing dialysis),
- Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis,
- Condition after prolonged immobilization of the body,
- Convalescence after bone fractures,
- Reduction of allergy symptoms.
Calperos – dosage
Calperos should be dosed according to the doctor’s recommendations or the information available on the package leaflet. Typically, its use depends on the daily requirement of calcium, which is broken down as follows:
- Adolescents and adults – 800-1200 mg of elemental calcium,
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women – 1000-1500 mg of elemental calcium,
- Postmenopausal women not using hormone replacement therapy – 1500 mg of elemental calcium,
- Postmenopausal women using hormone replacement therapy – 1000 mg of elemental calcium,
- People over 65 years of age – 1500 mg of elemental calcium.
In the case of Calperos 500, take 1-2 capsules 2-3 times a day, while Calperos 1000 – 1 capsule 2-3 times a day. Drugs are best dosed during meals.
A daily dose of 1200 mg of calcium ions, i.e. 6 Calperos 500 or 3 Calperos 1000 capsules, must not be exceeded.
Calperos – contraindications to use
The main contraindication to the use of Calperos is hypersensitivity to any of the substances in the preparation. In addition, it cannot be taken in the case of:
- High levels of calcium in the blood, which is most often associated with diseases and conditions such as: hyperthyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D3 overdose, tumors with bone metastases, myelomas and severe renal failure not treated with dialysis,
- Kidney stones,
- Treatment with cardiac glycosides,
- Severe hypercalciuria.
Calperos – recommended precautions
The recommended precautions when taking Calperos apply mainly to people with renal insufficiency, as well as patients who are taking vitamin D at the same time. In these patients, the level of calcium in the blood and urine should be monitored.
- What are the characteristics of hypercalcemia?
People taking Calperos and cardiac glycosides at the same time should remain under the care of a doctoras elevated serum calcium levels may potentiate the effects of glycosides, which will be associated with arrhythmias.
Calperos – the effects of taking a higher dose
Although no symptoms of acute poisoning were noticed in the laboratory studies conducted with Calperos, taking a high dose of the preparation may result in disorders such as:
- Anorexia,
- Excessive thirst
- Muscle weakness,
- Bone pain
- Polyuria
- Vomiting,
- Constipation
- Tiredness,
- Disturbances of consciousness.
In severe cases, nephrolithiasis, nephrocalcinosis or cardiac arrhythmias may occur. If symptoms are observed, the patient should not be given lithium, vitamin A or diuretics. The doctor will need to lavage the stomach, and it will also be important to stay hydrated and to administer diuretics (e.g. corticosteroids).
Calperos – drug interactions
Particular attention should be paid to the interactions of Calperos with:
- Thiazide diuretics which increase calcium reabsorption which can lead to excessive levels of calcium in the blood.
- Corticosteroids that reduce calcium absorption
- Tetracycline antibiotics and fluorine compounds, as calcium salts reduce their absorption,
- Quinolones, cephalosporin antibiotics and preparations containing iron, as calcium compounds reduce their absorption,
- Cardiac glycosides, as calcium compounds increase their toxicity,
- Bisphosphonates and calcium fluorides, as calcium compounds reduce their absorption,
- Vitamin D, which increases the absorption of calcium,
- Veronimil and other calcium channel blockers, because calcium salts reduce their effect,
- Oxalic acid and phytic acid as they reduce calcium absorption.
Calperos – side effects of use
The main side effects occurring during the use of Calperos include:
- Metabolism and nutrition disorders (hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria),
- Gastrointestinal disorders (constipation, flatulence, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea),
- Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders (pruritus, hives, rash).
Calperos – how to store the drug?
Calperos should be stored in a room with a maximum of 25 degrees C. It is best to choose a place that is inaccessible and invisible to children. After the expiry date, the drug should not be taken.
Calperos – how much does it cost?
Calperos is available over the counter. The drug can be purchased at a pharmacy or through the website. For 30 Calperos 500 capsules we will pay about PLN 14, for a package containing 200 capsules – about PLN 54. A package of Calperos 1000 (100 capsules) costs about PLN 36.
