Sedation tablets containing benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines act in the central nervous system by selectively targeting specific areas of a protein in the brain called GABA-A receptors. There are three types of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric) receptors in the brain: GABA-A, GABA-B, and GABA-C. GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain (a chemical that helps block nerve activity). GABA helps regulate movement control, vision, anxiety, and many other brain functions. Benzodiazepines enhance responses to the inhibitory GABA neurotransmitter by opening GABA-activated chloride channels and allowing the entry of chlorine ions into the neuron. This action allows the neuron to become negatively charged and resistant to excitation, leading to the anxiolytic, sedative or anticonvulsant effects seen with these drugs.
Benzodiazepines are most often used as sedation drugs in alcohol withdrawal syndrome as they reduce unpleasant withdrawal symptoms and can even save the patient’s life.

Benzodiazepines and Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Anxiety and everyday worry is a very common problem in adults. However, when this daily, even unjustified worry becomes chronic and lasts for a period of six months or more and interferes with normal functioning, we can talk about generalized anxiety disorder (REPTILE). GAD is one of the most common anxiety disorders, affecting nearly 7 million people worldwide, of which it is common in the elderly.
Common symptoms of GAD include:
- excessive anxiety for at least six months not due to a different mental state, taking medications or abusing psychoactive substances,
- sleep disturbances, insomnia,
- tiredness,
- anxiety,
- difficulty concentrating
- irritability,
- muscle tension.
For this condition, sedative medications include antidepressants and benzodiazepines. The latter are supportive therapy. Only short-term use of low-dose benzodiazepines (2 to 6 weeks) is recommended, with a slow, gradual decrease as the antidepressant effect is maintained.

Benzodiazepines and panic disorder
Panic disorder is a special type of anxiety disorder. A person with panic disorder has panic attacks, which are repeated episodes of severe fear. These symptoms may be accompanied by physical symptoms similar to the body’s normal response to danger, often called the ‘fight or flight’ phenomenon. Panic attacks can accompany other mood disorders such as depression, anxiety or addiction. There are also symptoms such as:
- fast heart rate
- trembling or tingling hands
- facial flushing and sweating
- dyspnoea,
- fear and increased awareness of the environment,
- loss of control,
- avoiding crowds or other public spaces for fear of an impending attack (agoraphobia).
Benzodiazepines are used when starting panic disorder treatment. They have a calming effect on the human body and quickly reduce panic attacks. These sedation pills are safe when used as directed by your doctor.

Sedation tablets with hydroxyzine
The sedative tablets containing hydroxyzine have a sedative, anxiolytic and antihistamine effect. Hydroxyzine affects the central nervous system, namely, it suppresses activity in some key areas of the subcortical region of the central nervous system.
Hydroxyzine in tablets is used in the case of anxiety disorders, over-excitation, restlessness, mild to moderate panic attacks, psychogenic pruritus, and psychomotor hyperactivity.
Hydroxyzine, despite the fact that it is considered a safe drug (it can also be used in children in the form of a syrup), may cause unwanted side effects. First of all, despite the fact that hydroxyzine is used as an antihistamine, it can cause an allergic reaction. Then it may appear: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. In rare cases, hydroxyzine can cause a severe skin reaction. Stop taking this medicine and see your doctor immediately if you develop flushing or a rash that spreads and causes white or yellow spots, blisters, or peeling. Also, stop taking the sedative tablets with hydroxyzine if you have symptoms such as:
- fast or pulsating heartbeat
- headache with chest pain
- severe dizziness, fainting,
- seizures.
Side effects such as sleepiness and confusion may be more common in older people.
Common side effects of hydroxyzine can include:
- somnolence,
- Headache,
- dry mouth.
In addition, if the sedative tablets containing hydroxyzine are misused or abused, they can be hazardous to the health of the patient and even lead to addiction. Dependence on these sedative pills usually occurs in people who use stimulants and in people who are genetically burdened with addiction.
Calming tablets – contraindications
Not all of us can use sedation pills, both prescription and herbal. The main contraindications to their use are:
- hypersensitivity to the active substance,
- alcoholism,
- brain damage,
- liver damage
- kidney damage,
- mental illness.
Instead of tablets, go for Serenity – a natural herbal mixture of Lorem Vit, which should be brewed and drunk once a day.
Calming pills and driving a car
Herbal calming pills, despite the fact that they have a relaxing effect on the human body, do not disturb psychomotor perception and coordination. Using them, you can usually drive a car without major contraindications. However, this is not the case with the prescription sedation pills. They affect concentration, cause drowsiness, can lower intellectual functions, so you should not drive any motor vehicle after taking them.
Prescription sedation pills for pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant, consult your doctor before taking any sedation pills. Sedation tablets containing hydroxyzine are not recommended for pregnant women (especially in the first and second trimester) and breastfeeding.
Hydroxyzine crosses the placental barrier, reaching higher concentrations in the fetus than in the mother. American research indicates that hydroxyzine can cause birth defects in the fetus, including central nervous system (CNS) depression, clonic movements, extrapyramidal symptoms, hypotension, movement disorders, neonatal hypoxia and / or urinary retention.
Benzodiazepine-based sedative tablets are also not recommended for pregnant women. Long-term use of benzodiazepines in pregnancy increases risk of neonatal hypotension, feeding problems and withdrawal symptoms in the baby.
The use of hydroxyzine and sedation tablets containing benzodiazepines during breastfeeding is also not recommended as they pass into breast milk. The final decision on the use of these two active substances is made by the physician.
Before use, read the leaflet, which contains indications, contraindications, data on side effects and dosage as well as information on the use of the medicinal product, or consult your doctor or pharmacist, as each drug used improperly is a threat to your life or health.
