Calm presence is the ability to be in reality without body rattling. In more detail, this is a state of calm when perceiving what is happening, as well as the practice of conscious rest, a psychotechnical and psychotherapeutic procedure that frees a person from rattling, negative or noise records in the unconscious. The practice of calm presence is peace and stillness, it is the cessation of all and sundry emotions.

A calm presence provides a view of the situation, cleared of fears, emotions, personal expectations and ideas that “things should not be so at all” …

In a state of calm presence, a person impartially (like a video camera) carefully observes (clearly sees, hears and feels) everything that happens here and now. What is happening does not touch the observer mentally, but is perceived by him as a sequence of facts that can be simply stated.

A calm presence is the look of a mentally healthy and strong person.

The ability and habit of being inside in a state of calm presence is a reliable remedy for manipulation, helps to act effectively in unfamiliar and work-stressful situations, and promotes decision-making based on common sense.

Quiet presence in human life

Quiet presence is practiced and simply implanted into life in a variety of forms in a variety of people. Yogic asanas and candle flame meditations, Zen meditations on a dot on the wall, children’s games of «who will outstrip whom» and even standing in the corner of children are all different forms of calm presence. Action is always beneficial.

William James, more than a hundred years ago, in lectures to teachers, told how educated Indians came to them in Cambridge. “I don’t understand,” said one of them, “how you can live the way you live: without taking a single minute a day to think in a calm position. For us Hindus, a necessary part of our life is those half an hour a day that we spend in silence, in complete peace, holding our breath and thinking about eternity. Every Hindu child is taught this from a very early age.” The good fruits of such habits are manifested in physical calmness, in the absence of tension, in an amazing pleasantness and evenness of facial expression, in the equanimity of Hindus. And I felt that my compatriots themselves were depriving themselves of an important pleasant trait of character” (W. James. “Psychology in Conversations with Teachers.” — St. Petersburg, 2001. — P. 61).
