Calla: care and cultivation

Calla: care and cultivation

Calla lives in swamps or lakes. This ornamental plant can be placed near an artificial reservoir on the site. It does not create problems with reproduction, moreover, it will have to limit its growth.

Another name for this plant is “marsh calla”. This is a perennial bog flower that can grow up to 50 cm in height. It has a powerful root system, dense bright green leaves. Calla flower is a cob-shaped inflorescence on a dense long stem. Both male and female flowers are located on the cob. The ear is framed by a blanket – a white leaf. Calla lilies have bright red fruits with purple seeds.

Calla grows easily and swamps lakes and ponds

The flower is unpretentious and undemanding to growing conditions, but loves moisture and light. You can breed it:

  • in pots;
  • in greenhouses;
  • in natural reservoirs.

The fertile muddy bottom feeds well the plant that lives near lakes and swamps.

Calla lilies can be grown from cuttings, tubers or seeds. When propagating by layering, shoots with roots must be transplanted from the parent plant in August-September. Place the sprout first in a small pot and later in a large one. Water it regularly, feed it every 2 weeks, alternating manure with mineral fertilizer.

The seeds for planting must be fresh. Soak them in potassium humate and place them on a damp cloth at 20-23 ° C. The sprouted seeds must be sown in a box with soil, later the sprouts must be transplanted into pots. Soil for calla lilies consists of turf and leafy soil with the addition of peat and sand.

The plant needs drainage, place it on the bottom of the pot

The optimum temperature for growth is 10-12 ° C. A rise in temperature of about 4 ° C promotes flowering. During flowering, you need to regularly feed the plant and reduce the amount of nitrogen.

When growing in pots, calla lilies must be provided with bright light, but they are afraid of direct sunlight. With abundant watering, the plant should have good drainage. Water it 3-4 times a day, every 3 days. Flowers need to be replanted regularly. First every year, then every 2-3 years. Calla lilies need wintering at a low temperature of 11-12 ° C and without watering from about November to February.

If you are planting a flower in a pond, plant it in the shade. Plant it in a container with holes and nutritious soil. Cover the top layer of soil with 2 cm of clay so as not to erode the soil. Place the crate on the bottom of the pond near the shore.

All parts of calla lilies are poisonous and can cause poisoning.

An artificial lake, framed by calla cups, recreates a wilderness on the site. White flowers adorn the site, and bright red fruits appear in August. For all its beauty, the plant is poisonous, this must be taken into account if there are children in the house.
