Pollen allergy is the most common allergic disease of the respiratory system. A watery runny nose, sneezing in series, a scratchy throat, tear itchy eyes – such as an allergy to pollen is manifested. These symptoms are related to the pollen time of sensitizing plants, so it is important to follow pollen messages in your area. The following calendar of pollination of plants in Poland will also be helpful.
What is an allergy? Which pollen causes the allergy the most?
As the Polish Society of Allergology explains, “an allergy is a tendency to overreact to common substances that do not cause a reaction in healthy people”. The symptoms of such a reaction include itching, tearing or redness of the conjunctiva, runny nose, cough, repeated sneezing, hives or eczema, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea.
One of the most common types of allergy is inhalation allergy (inhaled allergens get into the respiratory tract). And one of the most common allergens is pollen from grasses, flowers, weeds, grains, and trees.
The most common allergenic plants are: birch (pollen from March to May), alder (from February to April), nettle (from May to September), mugwort (from July to September), rye (May and June).
It is worth remembering that in rural areas the pollen concentration is highest in the morning, and in cities – in the evening.
The causes of allergies – still under investigation
– It is said that allergy actually affects each of us – directly, when we struggle with it ourselves, or indirectly, because it concerns one of our loved ones – emphasized in an interview with Medonet, specialist in the field of molecular diagnostics of allergy, Dr. Emilia Majsiak, MD, Ph.D. . But why are more and more people experiencing allergic reactions? There is no simple answer to this question.
– We know the predisposing factors, including increasing environmental pollution, an increase in the amount of chemical substances in our environment or improper nutrition. The so-called the hygiene theory, which sees the causes of allergies in the fact that we live too sterile. Our immune system is adapted to fight pathogens – if there is no opponent, it considers factors that are not really threatening if there is no enemy. Of course, it is impossible not to mention the genetic predisposition in the development of allergies – says Dr. Majsiak. In fact, the question of why one person is allergic to mites while the other does not react to them is the subject of a lot of research, he adds.
