Calcium lactate (E327)

Substance E327 or food additive calcium lactate helps to prevent oxidative reactions in foods, referring in itself to the group of pronounced antioxidant additives. According to chemical characteristics, it is a calcium salt of 2-hydroxypropanoic acid with the formula С6Н10О6Са*хН2О, while x=0-5. The above substance is obtained by neutralizing lactic acid with hydroxide or carbonate. E327 contains 13% pure calcium.

Regarding the physical qualities of the E327 food additive, it should be said that it is a white, faintly smelling fine powder, it is well weathered in the open air, it is easier to obtain a solution of calcium lactate in hot water, where the substance dissolves instantly, in contrast to cold water, in which dissolution happens much more slowly. Also, lactate is poorly soluble in ethyl alcohol, ether and chloroform.

Areas of use

Whether or not the E327 food additive is dangerous for human health can be determined based on its properties. The use of calcium lactate in pharmacological production is justified and necessary in the production of drugs for patients suffering from all kinds of allergies, hypocalcemia, skin diseases, increased vascular permeability and problems of the parathyroid glands.
