Calcium Gluconicum Espefa – indications and dosage
Calcium Gluconicum Espefa is a recommended drug:
- to prevent calcium deficiency,
- as an alternative, in parallel with anti-inflammatory, anti-edema and anti-exudative drugs.
Drug dosage
Calcium Gluconicum Espefa is in the form of tablets to be taken by mouth. It is recommended to take the drug with a meal.
- Adults. 3 tabl. 3-4 × / d.
- Youth and children after 4 years of age 1-2 tablets 3 × / d.
Calcium Gluconicum Espefa and contraindications
Contraindications to the use of Calcium Gluconicum Espefa are:
- hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation,
- hypercalcemia,
- hiperkalciuria,
- severe renal failure.
Calcium Gluconicum Espefa – warnings
- The calcium in the drug can affect the absorption of many drugs; in the case of using other drugs, it is recommended to check (e.g. in patient information leaflets) whether their parallel use with calcium preparations is allowed.
- Patients with a tendency to build up mineral deposits in the urinary tract are advised to drink more fluids.
- In patients with impaired intestinal absorption, the effect of the preparation may be reduced or completely inhibited.
- Calcium Gluconicum Espefaz should not be given with foods containing oxalic acid (e.g. spinach, rhubarb) or phytic acid (e.g. bran, whole wheat bread).
- Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Calcium Gluconicum Espefa and other substances
- It is recommended that you inform your doctor about all medicines you have recently taken.
- Chronic corticosteroids, excess lipids, alkaline food, phytates (contained in cereal products), oxalates (oxalic acid is contained, for example, in spinach and rhubarb), phosphates (contained in milk and milk products), cause a lower absorption of calcium salts from the gastrointestinal tract.
- Vitamin D3, parathyroid hormone, citric acid and an acidic food increase the absorption of calcium.
- Orally administered calcium compounds reduce the absorption of tetracyclines, fluorine compounds, atenolol, iron salts, sulfasalazine, fluoroquinolones, fosfomycin; an interval of about 3 hours is required between the administration of these drugs and calcium compounds.
- Taking a preparation with thiazide diuretics (eg hydrochlorothiazide) entails the risk of hypercalcaemia; regular monitoring of blood calcium levels is recommended.
- Calcium Gluconicum Espefa may reduce the effect of verapamil and other calcium channel blockers and increase the toxic effects of digoxin and other cardiac glycosides and lead to arrhythmias.
- Taking calcium lowers the level of phosphate in the blood.
Calcium Gluconicum Espefa – side effects
During the use of Calcium Gluconicum Espefa, the following may occur:
- gastrointestinal disorders (constipation, flatulence, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea),
- a metallic taste in the mouth
- lack of appetite
- increased thirst,
- increased urine output,
- bone pain.
