Cabernet grapes: description

It is grown in many countries, including in central Russia, due to its unpretentiousness to climate conditions and frost resistance. Relatively resistant to typical grape diseases – mildew, oidium and anthracnose.

Cabernet grapes have an interesting taste, which is transferred to the wine

When describing a plant, the following features can be distinguished: leaves of medium size, with deep divisions. The underside is not very pubescent. Young leaves are light green, turning into burgundy at the tops. The conical bunches are of medium size – their weight usually slightly exceeds 100 g. The taste of the berries is peculiar. They are not suitable not only for fresh consumption, but also for making juice. But the wine is of excellent quality. The young drink retains the herbaceous aroma of the fruit with a nightshade flavor. The plant itself is quite large, the size of the bush is larger than average. Fruiting of shoots is 95%.

The flowers of this grape are bisexual, but manual pollination is recommended for best results. When growing, the gardener should know the following features:

  • This variety is characterized by late flowering, so spring frosts do not affect yield.
  • The plant survives in drought conditions, tolerates severe frosts, but this can cause a decrease in yield.
  • The bunches can remain on the branches until late autumn, frost will not harm them.
  • Even in the case of a rainy summer, the fruits are resistant to rotting.
  • Cuttings take root and develop quickly on any soil.

The grape bush can be damaged by diseases and insects. Its most important enemies are grape and spider mites. The first leaves red spots on the leaves, causing swelling of their surface. The second covers them with cobwebs. These pests are easy to fight with sulfur-containing preparations.

The plant can infect the phylloxera aphid, which leaves behind open holes in parts of the bush – leaves, shoots, roots. An effective way to combat it is to plant a bush on rootstocks that are not susceptible to this pest.

On the basis of this variety, many other varieties have been bred: “Sauvignon”, “Frant”, “Cabernet Severny” or “Michurinsky”. Each of them is created with its own distinctive features and advantages.
