“By doing yoga without clothes, I was finally able to accept my body”

Naked yoga is a new way to achieve harmony with your body. The 25-year-old athlete, the author of the popular Nude Yoga Girl Instagram account, spoke to Psychologies about her experience.

Psychologies: How do you think yoga helps to reveal sensuality?

Nude Yoga Girl: The main thing in yoga is not how you look, but how you feel. In the classroom, you learn to know, understand and control your body. Yoga helps you tune in to your feelings and hear your inner voice better. When you focus on the present moment, you connect with your Self. All sensations intensify, and this connection awakens your sensuality.

How do you feel when you do yoga without clothes?

NYG: I do it sometimes, but usually I’m still dressed. Naked yoga gave me more freedom. She helped me accept my body, accept myself. Getting rid of clothes, I return to natural sensations. I feel that the body belongs to me. I accept myself as I am, impartially and without judgment. The feeling of air on the skin helps to further realize the connection with the world. In addition, some exercises in clothes are inconvenient to perform.

Why did you decide to do this?

NYG: In the past, I felt awkward when I stripped in front of my partner or walked down the beach in a bikini. For a long time, I didn’t have confidence in myself. When I first started practicing nude yoga, it was a bit weird. I was embarrassed when I saw myself in these poses. But I got used to it very quickly. Now I have learned to appreciate my body and would not agree to change it for another. It’s not about getting naked in front of thousands of people and feeling at ease. The most important thing is to like yourself.

You are a photographer and a model. Don’t you think that accepting your body means being a bit of a narcissist?

NYG: Narcissistic personalities put themselves above others, which is not what I want to convey. If we accept our body and show healthy love for ourselves, this will definitely lead to better relationships with others. When we are dissatisfied with ourselves and do not feel confident, we spend a lot of mental strength. Loving yourself and being self-centered are two different things. Yoga is a gentle approach to self-development. Do not force yourself to achieve perfection. For me, this practice has become a way to regain faith in myself and understand that you need to love yourself the way you are. The body is a gift that makes each of us unique.
