Buscopan – indications, contraindications, side effects

Buscopan is a drug used in gynecology, gastroenterology and urology, incl. to relieve spasms of smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and the genitourinary system. The preparation affects the work of the digestive tract. Buscopan is available in tablet form and is dispensed without a prescription.

Buscopan indications for use

The active substance in Buscopan is hyoscine, an alkaloid of urticaria, an antagonist of central and peripheral muscarinic receptors. The preparation is administered to relieve pain associated with cramps in the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tract or urinary system and the reproductive organ in women (dysmenorrhea).

Dosage:

  1. Adults and children after the age of 12: 1-2 tablets. 3-4 times a day.
  2. Children from 6-12. years of age: 1 tablet 3 times a day.

Buscopan and contraindications and warnings

Contraindications to the use of Buscopan are:

  1. hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation,
  2. myastenia gravis,
  3. obstruction in the digestive tract or urinary tract,
  4. pathological widening of the large intestine,
  5. angle-closure glaucoma,
  6. the period of breastfeeding.

Buscopan – warnings

  1. Use caution in people prone to tachycardia, with a narrowing of the intestines or urinary tract.
  2. Before using the medication Buscopanu pregnant women should consult their doctor.
  3. Do not use during breastfeeding.
  4. In isolated cases, accommodation disorders (blurred vision) may occur and such persons should not drive a motor vehicle.

Buscopan – interactions with other drugs

  1. Buscopan may increase the anticholinergic effects of antihistamines, quinidine, amantadine, disopyramine and tricyclic antidepressants.
  2. Concomitant treatment with dopamine antagonists (e.g. metoclopramide) may reduce the gastrointestinal effects of both drugs.
  3. Buscopan may increase the tachycardia (increase in heart rate) caused by beta-adrenergic drugs.

Buscopan – side effects

The following may occur: dry mouth, increased heart rate, accommodation disorders, sweating disorders, urinary retention. Allergic reactions, mainly skin rashes and, exceptionally, breathing difficulties may occur occasionally.

  1. Hyoscine is an active substance also present in the drugs Vegantalgin H and Scopolan.
