Haluks is also called hallux valgus. This disease often occurs in women, especially those who have not given up wearing high-heeled shoes (so-called high heels) for a long period of their lives. However, not only high shoes can cause deformation of the foot, which leads to the formation of bunions. It also makes shoes too tight or with a narrow end.
Bunions: how are they formed?
An overloaded foot, due to incorrectly selected footwear, changes over time. The transverse arch is lowered and the forefoot widens. For this reason, the biggest toe of the leg is positioned in an unnatural way, slowly changing its position, creating a painful, but also cosmetically and visually unpleasant-looking arch.
Treatment and prevention
- Wearing appropriate shoes; footwear adapted to the size and size of your foot
- The cause may also be some genetic predisposition regarding the positioning and construction of the foot. Unfortunately, it cannot be ruled out in prophylaxis, and genetic tests that could reveal such predispositions are not carried out
- Reducing your body weight if you are overweight or obese
- Changing your lifestyle from standing to more sedentary
Treatment of extreme types of ailments
Surgical treatment of bunions is used only in the case of inflammation of the joint capsule and significant hypertrophy of the first metatarsal bone. The orthopedic surgeon decides whether to proceed with the operation or to qualify the patient in general.
Treatment without surgical intervention
First of all, it is worth investing in special orthopedic insoles. Silicone inserts are added to them, which are placed between the big toe and the second, which causes the big toe to be “pushed” in the direction it should be on. These cartridges can be purchased at a pharmacy.
What else can you find in a pharmacy?
- Patches and gel covers on bunions – they also contain soothing oils that make the foot muscles stronger and less painful
- Pellets, i.e. T-shaped gel inserts and others – help to distribute the pressure in the foot. They slow down the further development of the disease
- Wristbands for bunions – also prepared with a special gel. They protect the foot against abrasions and guide the toe outside, positively affecting the distribution of pressure on the foot
- Corrective braces for the night and for the day – they help to endure pain and, of course, help in getting rid of deformities. Often used also after surgery
First of all, in the symptomatic treatment of bunions, painkillers will also be helpful. Haluksy they not only cause great discomfort when moving, but can also make it much more difficult if the hypertrophy is so large that it causes unbearable pain.
