The history of the Bronx cocktail
The history of the Bronx cocktail dates back to the early years of the XNUMXth century. It was then that this drink appeared in the famous bar “Men’s Bar” of the Waldorf Hotel.
The bar’s regulars were wealthy industrialists and financiers who worked next door on Wall Street. Between themselves, they called the famous bar “Bull & Bear (Bull and Bear)”.
It was in this bar that one of the best bartenders of that time, Johnny Solon, worked.
One day, when he was mixing a Duplex cocktail of dry and sweet vermouth, squeezed orange juice and orange bitterness at the counter, the head waiter of the Empire Room, the main restaurant of the Waldorf Hotel, came to him and asked him to do something new for his client, doubting his abilities. bartender.
Then the bartender, having completed the Duplex, simply poured gin and orange juice into it and gave the cocktail to the waiter without even trying it.
The client was very pleased with the work of the bartender and predicted a great future for the resulting drink.
The name of the cocktail was also largely coined by accident. Johnny Solon simply said to the waiter, “Say it’s called the Bronx,” referring to the Bronx Zoo he visited a few days ago.
Already in the 30s, the old hotel was demolished, and a new Waldorf-Astoria was opened nearby. The bar moved there, and the Bronx cocktail was still the hallmark of the legendary place.
Today, the cocktail is included in the list of classic cocktails approved by the International Bartending Association and is considered the No. 1 cocktail with fruit juice.
