Preparatory work
In order for a home-made frying hearth to be effective, and you make a minimum of mistakes in its manufacture, you need to prepare for the workflow. The main assistants are welding and a grinder.
We select a gas cylinder and proceed to its preparation. It would be useful to draw up a design project, which will also help in the calculation of building materials. For barbecue, you can use any cylindrical container. The classic version is a 50-liter container. If a more mobile barbecue is a priority, a standard 27 l cylinder will do. Some containers have an increased diameter, which significantly increases the ignition efficiency. Due to the large size, the width of the container optimally accommodates several skewers.
From the tools we will use welding, a grinder, an electric drill, a tape measure, a core, wrenches, etc.
Drawing
Drawing up a brazier project from a gas cylinder will not take much time. It is quite enough to create a simple drawing, in which be sure to indicate the dimensions of the structure. Instruction step by step
Making a brazier yourself is not so difficult. You should remember about safety, because you have to cut the product in which the gas was. It is necessary to avoid sparks, fires of propane residues.
First block of work:
- We unscrew the valve, the remaining gas should leave the container.
- We turn the structure over, wait until all the condensate has gone.
- When bubbles do not appear, proceed to the process.
- We fill the vessel with water, drain the liquid after a few hours.
- We put the container on its side, cut off the valve. Treat the saw area with water.
Having coped with the first block of work, we proceed to cutting and welding the components.
Marking, sawing
Usually a barbecue is made on the basis of a 50-liter propane cylinder. This allows you to cook about 6 servings of kebab. Since products of this type can be called standard, their markup is considered the same. If desired, you can find a smaller design.
The outer diameter of the container is 96 cm. We divide it into 4 parts, it turns out 24 cm. We mark along the longitudinal seam. We measure all distances from this line, which will ensure the evenness of the markings and the absence of distortions. We measure 24 cm from the seam on both sides, draw lines. We put the product horizontally. Make sure the seam is at the bottom. We make markings for skewers.
We find circular seams, measure 3 cm from them. We do this on both sides. Then marks are applied every 8 cm. You should get 6 points, we make holes in them with a diameter of 1 cm. Now mark the cover. Consider the first marked line and the last. We apply a strip between them 3 cm from the circular seam. Finished with the lid.
Next up is cutting. Divide the container in half. We will perform the operation along the weld. Do everything carefully. Use the tool closer to the seam. We do not touch the side walls, they will perform the function of a fire damper, maintain the optimum temperature. When cutting, keep the side rings intact – this is a support for the cover.
Assembling the elements
Often, during the operation of the barbecue, its deformation is possible. To prevent this, we weld the corners inside the longitudinal edges. Due to this, a ledge is formed, where the grinder, skewer will be conveniently located. High legs need to be additionally well fixed. A welded corner on the outside is also suitable for this.
We make holes in the bottom of the container. This will make it easier for the coals to spill out, draining the water after a downpour. Plus, such holes will provide traction, which will positively affect the combustion of solid fuel.
In place of the valve, by welding, we install a pipe for removing smoke. Make it yourself or buy already assembled. Many users do without a chimney, you can also do this if you are going to cook food with an open lid.
Creation and installation of handles and legs
You need to decide how high the brazier will be from a standard propane cylinder. Then screw on the legs. The design should stand firmly, plus it will be more convenient to weld the cover.
Bolts are suitable for fixing the handle. We drill holes for them, fix them. The best option is simple handles that are resistant to high temperatures. Sometimes they are made independently using metal rods. Weld the handles to the base. We mount a limiter on the cover, which is created from corners or pipe components.
Decoration
In order for the brazier to serve not only as a functional component, but also to please the eye, its final finish plays an important role. Today, it is possible to emphasize the type of construction in absolutely different ways – from ordinary painting to the application of forged parts.
The shish kebab in the form of a steam locomotive looks unique. Do not confuse with a separate kind of hearth for frying – “smoker”. However, only specialists with welding can do it on their own.
Barbecue painting
If the old cylinder was taken as the basis, you can not do without painting it. You can perform processing with different materials, most often use:
- organosilicon heat-resistant enamel;
- powder thermal paint – needs to be fired in an oven;
- oxidation – reliable protection against corrosion.
It is highly recommended to process the brazier, since iron oxidizes and rusts. Special material will extend the service life of the container.
The surface must be covered evenly. It is advisable not to limit yourself to one layer. After the initial processing, take a break, allowing the paint to dry. It is better to start frying on the grill 7–10 days after painting it.
How to make a smoke oven
The smokehouse differs from the usual brazier in the presence of a firebox. Therefore, the tightness of the structure is a priority. To create such a stove, you need to remove half of the bottom. The firebox is formed from iron sheets. Previously, another cylinder was used for this, but the design turned out to be too overall. Details are welded, a chimney is equipped. To turn a traditional barbecue into a smokehouse, you need to perform just a couple of steps. The main thing is to make sure that the stove is airtight and the chimney is reliable.
Start cooking on the grill should not immediately, but after some time. If you have processed the structure, it is better to wait 7-10 days until the paint is completely dry, its smell will go away. First, burn the hearth with firewood. If the smell of gas has strongly ingrained into the walls of the tank, the structure must be heated several times.
It is known that the most beautiful and reliable braziers are made of brick, but the construction of a gas cylinder, erected correctly, will be no less effective. Paying attention to its decoration, you will get a worthy decoration of your summer cottage.
