Brahma (“Brahma”)

Brahma is a Brazilian beer brand with more than a century of history, which is one of the ten best-selling beers on the planet and is valued at almost $2,5 billion. Named after the English inventor of the safe and the hydraulic press, Brahma beer is positioned as a universal tool for solving a variety of life problems.

The presence of local corn in the drink recipe gives the beer extra freshness, so necessary in Brazilian realities, and adds popularity to the extraordinary Brahma Chopp far beyond the native Rio de Janeiro.

Together with a dozen other varieties of the brand, the traditional “Brahma” is present today in more than 30 countries. Brazilian beer has been available in Russia since the spring of 2005. It is produced by the Klin brewery of SUN InBev OJSC, the Russian division of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the current owner of the Brahma brand.

Historical information

The Brahma Villiger & Companhia brewery was founded in 1888 by Joseph Villiger, a native of Switzerland. Initially, the production with 32 employees in the state produced 12 thousand liters of beer per day. Among the many companies in this segment, Brama stood out for the quality of the product – bottom-fermented beer according to the founder’s original recipe. Although in 1904 the company changed ownership and became a joint-stock company, the vector for the quality of the drink has not changed. By 1934, Brama was selling about 30 million liters of beer a year, becoming one of the three largest producers in the Brazilian market. In the same period, bottling of the foamy drink began.

Nine years later, new varieties began to appear in the assortment. In addition to beer with the addition of corn, a stronger Brahma Extra lager was brewed from traditional ingredients: water, hops, barley malt. By the 80s of the last century, the line of drinks expanded, products began to be supplied to the USA and Japan. In 1992, a plant was built in Argentina.

The increase in the share in the domestic market was achieved, among other things, through close cooperation with the owners of bars, restaurants, and hotels. By lending to the owners, Brahma put forward conditions for the exclusive sale of its beer, equipping the premises with refrigerators, changing the interior, and replacing furniture. By changing the structure of sales of alcoholic beverages, Brahma also contributed to the transformation of lifestyle and the reshaping of urban areas, where small shops and familiar taverns gave way to modern hotel-bars.

In the 1980s, Brahma expanded through the purchase of rival Scol. Merged with Antarctica Paulista in 1999 to become part of the Americas Beverage Company. In the fall of 2008, as a result of a large-scale merger, the Brahma brand became the property of the largest company in the brewing industry, Anheuser-Busch InBev. The range of “Brahma” has increased markedly. Although only an insignificant part of the products is presented on the Russian market, the brand line includes light and red lager, wheat and non-alcoholic beer. Along with unpasteurized draft beer, canned beer is produced.

The promotion of the brand is facilitated by creative advertising, which has been repeatedly awarded prestigious awards, including at the largest Cannes Lions festival.
