Bowel upset during pregnancy, stomach upset
An intestinal disorder during pregnancy can happen at any time. The symptoms of bowel problems are not only diarrhea, but also constipation. Depending on the trimester in which the trouble happened, its causes may be different.
Intestinal upset during pregnancy: causes and first aid
The body owes its new position to digestive problems.
They can arise for the following reasons:
- In the early stages, diarrhea occurs due to rapid hormonal changes. In addition to loose stools, a woman is worried about bloating. Due to increased gas formation, the stomach may even slightly increase visually, but when the hormonal storm subsides, this will pass.
- The opposite situation can also occur, when a pregnant woman encounters constipation at an early stage. This is due to the dramatic increase in the hormone progesterone. It prevents miscarriage, but at the same time relaxes the muscles of the large intestine, slowing down its activity. Late constipation occurs due to the uterus compressing the intestines.
- An abdominal disorder in late pregnancy is considered a harbinger of an early birth. The body seeks to cleanse itself naturally.
- If, for any reason, antibiotics are prescribed to a woman, they can cause malfunctions in the gastrointestinal tract.
- Perhaps there was poisoning with stale food or an intestinal infection got into the body.
If action is taken promptly, an intestinal upset during pregnancy is unlikely to harm the baby.
Here’s how you can try to help yourself:
- In the early stages, you need to eat often, but in small portions. It is advisable to avoid foods that provoke gas production. If the problem is constipation, you need to add laxative foods to the diet: beets, prunes.
- If the doctor has prescribed antibiotics, you need to ask him to prescribe drugs that restore the natural intestinal microflora. This will prevent the development of dysbiosis.
- It is necessary to carefully monitor the quality of consumed products, wash vegetables, fruits, raw eggs well.
- You can ask your doctor for advice on what medications to take if you experience unpleasant symptoms.
If a high fever is added to the diarrhea, vomiting appears, it is better to call an ambulance. A particularly alarming sign is the appearance of blood in the feces or vomit.
