Bottled water contaminated with plastic – Dietetics – Articles |

Let’s be careful with what we drink from! The fact that water is the best choice for hydration is nothing new. However, it is important where we get this water from. Whether it’s tap water or bottled water – both have their pros and cons. But it would seem that the former should be used less frequently. Are you sure? Although we may have more reservations about bottled water, for example the issue of environmental pollution, the content of harmful bisphenol, in the article we will focus on the latest reports regarding the issue of plastic in water from bottles.

Recently A report by the University of New York was published (https://orbmedia.org/sites/default/files/FinalBottledWaterReport.pdf) summarizing the research of 11 water brands bottled (and at the same time 27 different products) purchased in 9 countries. The results are frightening from the point of view of the consumer who cares first and foremost about health and is aware of the long-term health effects associated with different type of environmental pollution. It turned out that out of 259 bottles of water, as much as 93% was contaminated with microplastics! It is true that only 5% of pollution They are ingredients with a relatively large diameter, but is it really calming information? Unfortunately, I don’t think so.

Grease in the bottle

Leftovers plastics in bottled water primarily come from the bottling process and packaging of these products. 4% of the contamination is also lubricants industrial, used in production rooms.

It’s worth it to mention that bottled water is not the only one and not the most polluted one microplastic product. Research indicates that the most harmful in this issues include: fish and seafood, sea salt, and beer. Unfortunately not we will run away from it, because the described pollution phenomenon is nothing another, as the result of technological and production progress, which after all we will not stop. We can only (or as much as) be increasingly aware of the issue protect your own health and that of your loved ones and choose – in this case – water tap. For the same study that I refer to in this article states that that microplastics contamination in tap water is twice as low on this in bottled water.

WHO The (World Health Organization) assured that it was necessary to lead further, more in-depth research on the issues described and reflected follow the topic carefully. Scientists say the results presented research is not catastrophic, and merely should not be underestimated, incl more so that there is still no clear evidence of the harmfulness of microplastics for people. Is that enough?

Co to choose?

Results these studies are indeed frightening. But what to do now – do not drink water from bottles? After all, we can also find traces of plastic in the tap. Solution can be filtering the water by applying carbon filters on top a half-liter bottle (which, by the way, is also made of plastic …) or use domestic non-plastic filter jug. Since Fr. this speech – perhaps the best (healthiest!) solution would be to use water packed in glass packaging? Admittedly, this increases the cost of the product final, but I think it is worth reducing the proportion of water from a plastic bottle for glass packaging – our body will thank us for it in long term.
