From the moment the baby is not or is no longer breastfed, we ask ourselves the question of the perfect water to incorporate in his bottle with powdered infant milk! If sparkling water is completely prohibited, it is possible under certain conditions to turn to either tap water or bottled water.
What is the best baby water?
Tap water or bottled water: both can fill our baby’s bottle as long as we have checked certain items!
If we turn to bottled water, the latter must necessarily be marked “suitable for the preparation of infant foods”. It is recommended that the water is not very mineralized and the bottle of water used must not be opened for more than 24 hours, always kept during this period in the refrigerator. Regarding bottled spring waters, their composition is not stable like that of bottled mineral water and we must therefore be all the more careful.
If we turn to our tap water, we must inquire at our town hall or the Ddas, Departmental Directorate of Health and Social Affairs, to be sure that the water in our home is suitable for feeding our newborn. This measure is all the more important if our home is old (before the 1950s) and the pipes risk contain lead.
It is recommended let it run for a few seconds the water from our tap before filling our baby’s bottle so that there is no deposit inside. The water should never exceed 25 degrees, at the risk of being loaded with microorganisms. Moreover, if our water is used to feed our baby, we must be all the more careful about maintenance of our faucet and do frequent descaling.
Can you use filtered water from a tap?
He moves strongly discouraged to use tap water for baby’s bottle that has undergone filtration, either by cartridge or by a filter jug. The microbial load may indeed be more important and dangerous for our newborn. This risk also concerns waters which have undergone softening.
What are the weakest or least mineralized waters?
« It is preferable to use weakly mineralized water such as Evian, Volvic, Mont de Roucous… », Indicates Doctor Jean-Michel Lecerf, nutritionist at the Institut Pasteur in Lille. In any case, let us take the time to read the labels carefully: the total mineralization of our bottled water must be equal to or less than 1 mg / liter. These waters have the advantage of being virtually free from nitrates, which are harmful to our baby’s body. In all cases, the nitrate content must be less than 15 mg / liter.
Bottle: what choice to make for a baby with colic?
If our baby is suffering from colic, it is especially important to choose water that is weakly mineralized. We can also try to massage his bloated belly and, if the colic does not subside, consult our pediatrician so that he or she may prescribe homeopathy or a probiotic.
Baby’s bottle: room temperature or heated water?
It is possible to offer a bottle to baby both at room temperature that a little heated. The rule being that his bottle never exceeds 37 degrees. We can ensure its temperature by pouring a few drops on our wrist of the heated preparation and shaken well so that it is homogeneous!
If we heat our infant’s bottle, we don’t never in the microwave and neither do you draw hot water from the tap. You must either heat the milk in a double boiler or in a bottle warmer.
Newborn: when to use boiled water for a bottle?
If we are not sure about the quality of the drinking water we use for our baby’s bottle, we can boil it then wait for it to cool. This method can be useful abroad, for example.
