Bols liqueurs: a short overview of the types of alcohol

The Dutch company Lucas Bols, founded in 1575, positions itself as the world’s oldest officially registered distillery.

The main specialization of Dutch distillers is the production of liqueurs.

Among them are several created, usurped or repurchased brands of global and local scale, consumed in their pure form and in some cases even served on royal tables, as well as several dozen drinks suitable exclusively for making cocktails.

World Brands by Lukas Bols

The following drinks are well-deserved worldwide popularity:

  1. Advocaat – egg liqueur, the prototype of which was brought by the Dutch from South America.

  2. Amaretto – quite a decent variation on the theme of the famous Italian almond elixir.

  3. Ваккари (Vaccari) – author’s sambuca, named after the creator of Galliano liqueur: Arturo Vaccari.

  4. Galliano (Galliano) – Italian vanilla-anise liqueur with herbal overtones, outbid by the cunning Dutch from the heirs of that same Arturo.

  5. Blackthorn Gin (Sloe Gin) – a dessert drink, beloved by the English people.

Domestic Dutch stamps

Among the liqueurs from Bols, which are not officially exported outside the country, special attention should be paid to the following:

  1. Goldstrike is a schnapps-based cinnamon decoction containing microscopic gold flakes. A tribute to the tradition that originated among the Dutch Boers: colonists from South Africa;

  2. Silverstrike – less strong silver-plated modern variation on the theme of precious metals;

  3. Black Chicken (Zwarte Kip) – the so-called thick Advocate: a more concentrated version of the egg dessert drink.

Fruit Brandy

Dutch distillers also classify the fruit and berry brandies they produce as liqueurs. This circumstance is probably due to the addition of a certain amount of sugar syrup to the drinks mentioned.

Among the drinks in this category there are the following names:

  1. Apricot brandy.

  2. Cherry brandy (Cherry brandy).

  3. Kirsch (Kirsch) – cherry, commonly produced in Swabia and German Switzerland.

  4. Princes Kirsch (Prinzenkirsch) is a sweeter and richer version of the previous drink.
