Bologna fishing rod is one of the most modern and versatile gear. It appeared in the Italian province of Bologna, where the Reglass rod factory is located to this day.
Somewhere in the 1980s, fiberglass telescopic rods appeared on the shelves of Soviet stores, which turned the idea of uXNUMXbuXNUMXbfishing technique among Soviet amateur fishermen. Although these rods were not from Italy, but by their design they gave some ideas about the Bologna rod.
Tackle features
Bologna fishing rod consists of the following main elements:
- Glass – or carbon fiber blank, from 5 to 8 meters long, consisting of several bends, where the coil is structurally provided for mounting.
- The presence of an inertial or inertialess coil. It all depends on the fishing conditions.
- Main line. As it is possible to use a fishing cord.
- Float with deaf or sliding fastening.
- A set of sinkers, a leash and a hook.
The design of the rod can include from 4 to 8 knees, each of which has a guide ring. The last knee may have an additional 1-2 rings to evenly distribute the force.
The rod is designed for long casting, although it is a float tackle and can be used for classic fishing. It can be used for fishing at depths and at a distance of up to 30 meters from the shore. To be able to make long casts, heavy floats are installed on the fishing rod. They can be attached both rigidly and with the ability to move along the main fishing line.
Feature of application
It can be used by both sport anglers and recreational fishermen, on water bodies with currents, as well as on reservoirs and lakes where there is no current. It can be used in classical fishing, as well as carry out postings of various types.
How to choose a rod
The rod is selected based on the following characteristics:
- Manufacturing material.
- Maximum length.
- building.
- The test.
Modern rod manufacturers are trying to make them strong, but light, so they are made using the latest technology. As a rule, glass fiber is used, which is impregnated with several layers of compound or carbon fiber. Carbon fiber rods are lighter in weight, while fiberglass rods are more durable. Therefore, you should choose a rod based on the conditions of fishing.
If the conditions require you not to let go of the rod for a long time, then the best option is a carbon fiber blank. If it is possible to install gear on a stand, then you can choose fiberglass. When fishing from a boat, a long rod is not required, but when fishing from the shore, the longer it is, the better. For this, rods are used, 6-7 meters long.
The action of a rod indicates how it can bend. Therefore, they are divided into:
- Hard action or fast action when only the tip of the rod is bent.
- Medium-hard action – the upper third of the rod can bend.
- Medium action – the rod bends from the middle.
- Parabolic (slow) action – the ability of the rod to bend along its entire length.
Used mainly rods with a hard or medium-hard action. This choice allows you to easily make various wiring and timely cuts.
Rod power is determined by his test, which depends on many factors, such as the depth of the reservoir, the casting distance, etc. Fishing rods with dough from 5 to 20 g are widespread.
When choosing a rod, you should pay attention to the quality of workmanship, both the rod itself and the guides.. Rings should not have any roughness, otherwise it will be problematic to carry out long casts. High-quality rods have access rings with porcelain liners. An important role is played by the height of the legs of the guide rings. The higher they are, the less likely the main line is to stick to the rod blank.
Coil selection
For a Bologna fishing rod, reels that meet the following characteristics are suitable:
- The characteristics of the reel must match the characteristics of the rod.
- The spool of the reel must hold at least 100 m of line.
- The presence of the function of the rear friction brake.
- certain gear ratio.
The Bologna rod can be equipped with a spinning or spinning reel, but a spinning reel is more convenient. The size of the reel should be proportional to the size of the rod. Depending on the length of the rod blank, the size of the reel can be in the range of 1000-4000. If a 7-8 meter long rod is used, then a 3500 size reel is ideal if the line thickness is within 0,2 mm.
The presence of a rear clutch is necessary only when catching large individuals. With proper adjustment, it will allow you to cope with a large specimen without any problems.
The gear ratio is within 5,7:1. We can say that these are the requirements for choosing a reel for a match fishing rod. This rule is also relevant when picking a Bolognese fishing rod.
The choice of fishing line
For the device of the Bologna fishing rod, it is better to use monofilament or fluorocarbon fishing line, with a diameter of 0,14 to 0,22 mm. For fishing where there are no thickets and there are no algae, you can use fishing lines with a cross section of 0,14 to 0,18 mm, and in places where there are thickets or snags – fishing line from 0,18 to 0,22 mm. At least 100 meters of fishing line should be wound on the spool. This is necessary so that in the event of a break, you can quickly repair the tackle. The presence of such a quantity of fishing line will allow long-distance casts. It is desirable that the spool be completely filled. This will reduce the chance of line getting caught on the spool during the cast.
Float selection
The float in the Bologna rod plays a very important role. It should not be seen by the fish, but it should be visible at a great distance. Moreover, it must be well configured. It can be fixed on the main fishing line rigidly or with the possibility of sliding along the fishing line. It all depends on the conditions of fishing. Rigid attachment of the float is justified when the fishing depth is less than the length of the rod by at least 1 meter.
Basically, floats of the following forms are used:
- The body of the float is like a drop (the body of the float expands from top to bottom).
- Fusiform (the lower part is narrower than the upper part).
- With a flat body (the working surface of the float looks like a disk).
Drop-shaped floats can be called universal floats. They can be used both in current and in still water. Spindle-shaped floats with hollow antennas have proven themselves well when using various types of wiring. Flat-shaped floats that look like a disc are indispensable in strong currents. In water bodies where there is no current, preference should be given to floats with oblong shapes. During the course, floats with rounded bite indicators show the best functionality.
In the case of long casts, floats with long and thick antennas are required so that they can be observed at a distance of up to 30 meters. For Bolognese equipment, floats with a long keel and an antenna are used, and in the body, which has a through hole through which the main fishing line is pulled. Such floats can have a weight of 4 to 20 grams and they are selected depending on the fishing conditions. Floats are also used, the weight of which can be changed. On such floats there is a corresponding marking, for example 8 + 4. This means that the float has a weight of 8 g, but you can add another 4 g to it.
There are two types of Bolognese floats:
- With fastening in one point.
- With fastening in two points.
More simple – this is the first type of attachment used when fishing on the current. The float is attached to the underside of the keel. It stays upright on the water, thanks to its good balance. It is easy to cast over long distances.
Gear loading
Bologna gear involves loading the float with one load or several. It all depends on what kind of reservoir fishing takes place. In stagnant water, a combined loading system can be used. In this case, 60% of the weight is attached closer to the float, and 40% is divided in half and attached in 20 cm increments from each other.
In the presence of a weak current, a chain of pellets is used, located at a distance of 10-15 cm one after the other. In the middle course, the pellets are installed almost side by side, at a distance of 70 cm from the leash. In the presence of a rapid current, a sliding type of sinker is suitable.
When properly loaded, only the float antenna should be visible on the surface of the water. In order to make a high-quality loading, it is better to do such work in advance, at home. Effective fishing, largely depends on the correct gear loading.
Leash attachment
It is desirable to use a monofilament line or fluorocarbon as a leader, even if the main line is braided. The diameter of the fishing line can vary between 0,12-0,14 mm. It should be remembered that fluorocarbon is not as reliable as fishing line and its diameter can be larger. The length of the leash can be different, based on the conditions and method of fishing. As a rule, a leash is present on the Bologna tackle, about 60 cm long. When fishing is carried out in the wiring, it can be shortened to 40 cm.
Hook selection
Going fishing, the angler takes with him hooks of various sizes. The best option is to take several ready-made leads of various lengths with you so as not to knit them during the fishing process. The size of the hook is selected depending on the size of the fish and the bait used. If small bait is used, such as maggot, bloodworm, etc., then hooks of sizes No. 14-No. 18 are suitable, and if a worm, pea or corn is used, then it is better to use hooks up to No. 12.
Sliding rig
Bologna tackle, like any other, can be equipped with a sliding float and sinker.
The process of assembling a Bolognese rod with a movable float consists of the following steps.
- A reel is attached to the rod using a reel seat.
- The main line is threaded through all the guide rings.
- After that, at least 100 m of fishing line is wound on the spool of the reel.
- A stock of fishing line is made about 2 meters and cut off.
- At a distance of 1 m from the end of the fishing line, a rubber or silicone stopper is installed.
- After that, a bead is put on the main fishing line and pulled up to the stopper.
- Then the float is attached.
- After the float, a bead is installed.
- The bead is stopped by lead pellets, which are the weight of the tackle.
- A loop is knitted at the end of the fishing line, to which the leash is attached.
- The leash is attached with a clasp and a swivel.
Feeding and feeding technique
The use of Bologna gear involves the use of bait mixtures designed for fishing in the course. In this case, you need to select them for a specific type of fish. The consistency of the bait should correspond to the fishing conditions. Groundbait can be bought at angler stores or you can make your own with the right ingredients. For one-time fishing, you need up to 4 kg of bait, adding about 2 kg of clay to it, increasing its viscosity.
Before starting fishing, it is better to check the density of the bait by rolling a ball out of it and throwing it into the water. If the ball continues to hold its shape in the water, then the groundbait density is too high. It will not perform its functions, and you should not count on successful fishing. Once on the bottom, the balls should crumble, creating a stern spot or a stern trail. When fishing in the current, you should create a stern trail in order to navigate along this trail.
At the initial stage, up to 60% of the bait is thrown into the water, and the rest is thrown in during the fishing process.
Bait is delivered to the bite site manually or with the help of devices, such as a slingshot, for example. It all depends on the distance from the coast. You may not be able to throw your hands over long distances.
- If the bait is delivered to the place manually, then balls with a diameter of 50 mm are formed from it and then they are thrown into the water where necessary.
- At large distances, it is better to resort to various tricks, using a slingshot or other device for this. At the moment, more and more anglers are using radio-controlled models of boats designed specifically for the needs of fishermen.
Technique of fishing
Using this tackle, fish are caught in three ways:
- In support.
- Into the wire.
- Free drift.
The most common is the first way. The other two are used if the first one doesn’t work. The technique of catching in hold is that the tackle, together with the float, is partially slowed down. Deceleration of the movement of gear downstream can be carried out continuously or periodically. Periodic sticking makes the fish pay attention to the bait passing by.
The tackle is thrown a little further and a little away from the baited strip. After that, the tackle is tightened and adjusted in relation to the direction of movement. Then the tackle is released, but periodic braking of its movement is made. As a result, the bait is much longer in the place of accumulation of fish, which increases the process of bites.
This fishing technique requires a certain amount of experience and skill, since frequent and prolonged holding of gear raises the bait into the water column in relation to the bottom, taking it away from the fish.
Using the wire method, you need a large load of gear. In this case, the sinker stretches along the bottom and the tackle moves somewhat slower than the movement of the water flow. With this method, large drop-shaped floats work well. But here it is very important not to overdo it with the load, so that the braking is minimal, otherwise the float will begin to drag under the water and normal wiring will not work.
The easiest way, which does not require special skills, is to completely release the gear when its speed of movement equals the speed of the current. It is good to use in the presence of a slow flow. But this method is less effective, although it is available to anyone, not even an experienced angler.
The Bologna rod can also be used for general fishing, especially in still water. With this method of fishing, there is no need to constantly hold the rod in your hands. It can be installed on any stand.
How to equip a Bolognese rod for fishing in the current.
When purchasing a Bolognese fishing rod, you should pay attention to such factors:
- You should choose not a cheap option so that the fishing rod lasts as long as possible.
- Given the specifics of fishing, it is better to choose a soft fishing rod, for a minimum load on the hands.
- If you purchase several different rods that differ in length, action and test, then this will allow you to fish in any conditions.
- Due to the fact that fishing takes place at some distance from the coast, the float is selected with a long and thick antenna.
- If the float is hard to see at long distances, then part of the cocktail tube can be glued onto it.
- You may need to use an inertial reel if you are fishing from a boat. In this case, it is more convenient.
- For fishing to be successful, you need to take several types of bait with you.
- For long distances, it is better to use braided line, as it has a greater breaking force, which means you can choose a line with a smaller diameter so that it has minimal resistance to flow.
The use of a Bolognese rod when fishing on the current requires a certain skill. Without long training, this type of fishing is impossible to learn. Yes, and this fishing rod requires special equipment, since it is unlikely that it will be possible to cast ordinary tackle over a long distance, especially if there is a side wind. From this it should be concluded that the fishing rod should be equipped only with modern, and most importantly, purchased elements. Given the fact that the tackle has to be constantly held in hand, the rod should be light. It may be a carbon rod (the most modern material), but it is very expensive and not everyone can afford it. Therefore, choosing this type of fishing, you need to be prepared for the fact that you will have to pay a lot of money, which is not always justified. After all, here you do not use an ordinary float, as when fishing with a fly rod. The presence of a float makes this gear not universal, especially since most fish lead a bottom lifestyle and it is better to catch them on bottom gear that does not have a float, which increases the casting range of the gear, and significantly. From this we can also conclude that the Bologna fishing rod can not be used everywhere, and sometimes this is not justified.
And yet, the choice remains with a specific person who is in certain conditions. These conditions may be one or another reservoir in which it is supposed to fish.
