Blue peony: tree peonies
Blue peony – this name refers to plant varieties that have pink or lilac flowers with a blue tint. Breeders have already bred a fairly large number of such varieties. They are gorgeous in themselves, and can also perfectly decorate group plantings.
Features of growing and care
Keeping blue tree-like or herbaceous peonies on your site is no different from growing other varieties. For good flowering and rapid development of the plant, you need to choose the right place, and then pay very little attention to this garden decoration.
The most important recommendations for growing a peony are as follows:
- Choose a sunny spot for planting. In the shade, it does not bloom and feels uncomfortable. The plot for it should be open to light and sunlight, not shaded by shrubs, trees or buildings.
- The best time to plant is late summer and early fall. So the plant adapts faster and begins active growth the next year. If you plant it in the spring, it will develop slowly and take root badly in a new place.
- The soil must be fertile. If clay or sandy soil predominates on the site, then a special substrate must be prepared for planting peonies.
Loose soil is useful for the flower so that air circulates freely in it. The most optimal breeding option is dividing the bush. When transplanting an adult plant, it must be divided, otherwise it will not be able to take root in a new hole.
Among the varieties with bluish flowers, the following representatives can be distinguished:
- Peony “Blue Sapphire”. In the photo, it looks like a bush with large lilac-blue flowers – they grow up to 16 cm in diameter. But the image cannot convey all its charm. The flowers have a delicate scent. The petals at the base are decorated with dark purple spots. The plant grows and develops rapidly. Flowering begins in the middle of the season. Among the blue varieties, it is one of the most popular and beloved by gardeners.
- “Heavenly Brocade”. Rose petals with a clearly visible blue tint, smooth and shiny. Large crown-shaped flowers grow up to 15 cm in diameter. Herbaceous look.
- “Song of the Rain”. A large tree-like shrub up to 120 cm high, the flower diameter is 19 cm. Pink-blue petals acquire a more intense color towards the center. Differs in abundant flowering.
It is not a problem to purchase such varieties in specialized outlets or online stores. These are just a few examples, in fact there are a lot of such varieties, and breeders do not get tired of working on breeding new ones.
