Blue Hawaii – a piece of the tropics in a glass

Among other alcoholic cocktails, Blue Hawaii compares favorably with its unique color, which is hard to forget. Well-balanced taste complements the pleasant impression of getting to know the drink. And most importantly, thanks to the availability of ingredients and ease of preparation, it is easy to make at home.

Historical reference. The Blue Hawaii cocktail appeared in 1957 in Honolulu, the capital of the state of Hawaii. The recipe was invented by Harry Yee, who at that time worked as a bartender at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The creation of a cocktail with an unusual bluish tint was ordered by a sales representative of the Bols alcohol company, which launched the production of a new Blue Curacao liquor that needed promotion.

Harry Yi is believed to have borrowed the title from Leo Robin’s “Blue Hawaii”. Subsequently, the 1961 film of the same name starring Elvis Presley, the song and the cocktail became the main promoters of Hawaiian culture in the world. Thanks to these masterpieces, millions of tourists came to the islands.

The taste of the Blue Hawaii cocktail resembles another tropical rum-based mix – Mai Tai, but compares favorably with its color. Due to the similarity of the recipes and technology of preparation of both drinks, “Blue Hawaii” was not included in the list of official cocktails of the IBA (International Bartenders Association). True, this did not prevent him from becoming almost more popular than his predecessor.
