Blue dwarf spruce for the garden

Dwarf spruce is suitable for small garden areas. Among the abundance of spectacular varieties, you can choose the right one for yourself.

These conifers live a long time, but do not flower or bear fruit, so they can only be propagated by cuttings. Bonsai are easy to care for and do not take up much space. They can even be grown in containers. Interesting landscape compositions are obtained with them.

Dwarf spruce “Push” – one of the smallest

There are many dwarf varieties in the common, Serbian, Canadian, and prickly spruce species. Among all the diversity, one can distinguish:

  • “Nidiformis”. Belongs to the common spruce family. The shape of the shrub is nest-like. At 10 years old, the height of the tree is only 0,4−1 m. The branches are long, the needles are light green.
  • Push. The shape of the crown is hemispherical. At 10 years old, spruce is 30-50 cm in diameter. Pink-red cones grow at the ends of the shoots.
  • Ehiniformis. This is a variety of Canadian spruce. The crown is spherical, up to 1 m in diameter, height is about 60 cm.
  • “Nana”. Serbian spruce variety. The crown is dense, conical in shape. The tree grows up to 2-3 m in height. The needles are yellow-green above and blue below.
  • Wills Zwerg. The crown is dense, narrow-conical in shape. At 10 years old, the height of the tree is 1−1,2 m.
  • “Konika”. A variety of Canadian spruce. The crown is dense, pyramidal, up to 2 m in diameter. By the age of 60, the height of the tree does not exceed 4 m.

These varieties need to be planted in a sunny area.

This type of spruce differs from others in the blue color of the needles. Small trees on the site retain their appearance in summer and winter.

Dwarf varieties:

  • Blue Kiss. Shrub with a spherical crown. At 10 years old, only 0,2-0,3 m in diameter. The spruce grows slowly, the annual growth is 1-3 cm. The needles are gray-blue, prickly.
  • “Belobok”. The tree grows slowly, the growth is 10-15 cm per year. The height of an adult spruce is about 2 m. This variety is a real masterpiece. Young branches are creamy white, old needles are blue or gray-silver.
  • “Waldbrunn”. The crown is spherical or conical. At 10 years old, the spruce is 0,5 cm high and 0,8 m wide. Young needles are bright blue, and the old ones are silvery-gray.

All varieties are winter-hardy and unpretentious in care. It is advisable to plant seedlings in a sunny, wind-protected area.

Dwarf spruces look good in any landscape compositions. They are suitable for single and group plantings on the lawn, in rock gardens, rockeries, near houses. Seedlings can be planted in pots and placed around the perimeter of terraces or on balconies.
