“Blood transfusion” – reanimating cocktail with burning absinthe

First of all, this cocktail is remembered not by its taste, but by its spectacular technology of preparation and serving. The author of the recipe, the place and time of appearance are unknown, but there are no analogues in the West, so we can assume that “Blood Transfusion” was invented in Russia. The taste is spicy-sweet, the drink quickly warms. Fortress – 32-34% vol.

Composition and proportions:

  • absinthe – 50 ml;
  • grenadine (pomegranate syrup) – 20 ml;
  • sprite or orange juice – 25 ml.

From the mandatory inventory you will need: a flat plate (it is possible with a slightly convex bottom), a cognac glass (snifter) with thick walls, a whiskey glass (rocks, tumbler or old fashion) and a lighter.

1. Place the snifter on a whiskey glass as shown in the photo.

2. Pour grenadine into a plate, add sprite or orange juice. Stir until the mixture is smooth and liquid. Pomegranate syrup is too thick, it is diluted with soda or juice so that the liquid seeps into the heated glass faster.

Attention! Some variations of the recipe use vodka instead of juice and sprite, this is not the best idea, since the mixture of absinthe and vodka is difficult to put out.

3. Pour absinthe into the snifter and set it on fire. Constantly rotate the burning glass for 15-25 seconds to evenly heat the walls. The glass should warm up to a temperature where it is unpleasant to touch it with your fingers.

Attention! If the walls of a cognac glass are thin, it can crack at any second.

4. Gently pour the burning absinthe onto a plate. Place an empty brandy glass in the center of the plate. Extinguish the flame immediately by blowing on it.

5. As soon as the fire goes out, “blood” (diluted grenadine) will begin to seep into the snifter. In 30-35 seconds, almost all the liquid will collect in a cognac glass.

If the grenadine slowly seeps in, you can slightly move the snifter a couple of centimeters to the side, then scroll around its axis. Repeat 3-5 times.

6. Holding the glass by the bottom, carefully turn the plate over and put it aside.

7. A ready-made Blood Transfusion cocktail can be served in a snifter, but because of the heated glass and the shape of the glass, it is inconvenient to drink it, it is easier to pour it into a rock or tumbler on which the cognac glass was placed. Drink in one gulp. If desired, have a slice of orange sprinkled with cinnamon.

How it works. When absinthe is ignited, the air in the glass expands due to heat. After the flame goes out, the air quickly cools and contracts, but already in a closed space, because of this, a vacuum is formed in some part of the glass. The difference in pressure pulls the diluted pomegranate juice into the snifter.
